Don C. Brawley - Inducted in 2012
Don was a lifetime resident of the Braffetsville and New Madison areas. He was born a deaf-mute. He grew up on the family farm with his parents, a brother and 3 sisters. he attended school in Columbus, Ohio and then his family moved back to New Madison when Don was a young man.
Don was well know for his loyalty to sports teams in the area. In 1960 a new ball diamond was dedicated and named Brawley field. The summer recreation leagues hirem him as their groundskeeper for the baseball fields.
Over the years, Don became the school mascot and rode the team bus to games. He attended all boys and girls baseball, softball and basketball games offereing everyone a piece of gum along with a quick note on the note pad that he was never without.
In 1978 The Varsity Club presented Don a plaque for attending 1,365 consecutive basketball games a record for the Guiness Book of Wolrd Records at the time. Don had amassed over 1700 consecutive games
Don handed out chewing gum to young and old alike. When word of this trademark spread to Chicago, The Wrigley Company sent him an ample supply of gum. It is estimated Don purchased over 2,500 packs of gum to give away as well.
Don was 79 years old when he died in the early 80's In his honor Don's picture has been commemorated in the mural in the commons area. Also his plaque, letter jacket and note pad are in a case located along the entrance hallway.
Don has been truly missed by the Tri-Village Communities.
