January 30, 2004 - Pleasant Hill

Tri-Village visited Newton still trying to make some noise in the conference and dropped a loss on the Indians leaving each team tied at 4-4 in the CCC. The game was played at a slow pace and both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket. But a strong third quarter by the Patriots was just enough to allow them to get out of town with a 49-43 win.

The first quarter started slow the score was knotted 6-6 and with 1:11 to play senior Derek Ary scored two on the inside. Then a Newton turnover with 18.6 seconds set up a Kyler Burns trey at the buzzer giving the Patriots an 11-6 lead after one.

In the second stanza both teams played even and Tri-Village was able to maintain their five point lead 22-17 at the half. Of the eleven Patriots points scored in the quarter, nine were from senior Josh Bailey, who knocked down two jumpers and 5 free throws.

The third period was the Corey Jay show for Tri-Village pulling down many rebounds; both defensively and offensively, three resulting in stickbacks for points. Jay would score 12 extending their lead to 16 points 38-22.

To start the final quarter it looked like the Patriots were going to blow the game wide open. But the Indians, particularly Kyler Booher willed their way back into the game. Newton scored 3 straight baskets and found themselves down ten 42-32 and Tri-Village Coach Lee Falknor called timeout.

The timeout failed to stop the momentum of the Indians as they made two steals in a row and closed within six points 42-36. But a driving baseline jumper by Josh Bailey halted the Newton run and ended the 3:30 dry spell by the Patriots.

Corey Jay scored two from inside the lane at 1:37 and Tri-Village took another time out leading 46-36. After the timeout freshman Kyler Booher drove hard to the basket for two and then stole the inbounds pass scoring again and was fouled converting his free throw now down 46-41 and Newton was back in the game.

Two free throws by Corey Jay at 28.3 seconds and a Derek Ary free throw with 16.4 seconds was enough to seal the victory 49-43. Freshman Kyler Booher led all scorers with 22 points while Corey Jay turned in a solid game for Tri-Village with 20 points, 15 rebounds and 6 blocked shots.

The Patriots move to 7-8 overall and will host Randolph Southern tomorrow night for their homecoming.
