The Patriots were looking to go above 500 in conference play with the Newton Indians coming to town tonight. It would turn out to be the outside game of Newton against the inside game of Tri-Village. Newton was showcasing the leagues leading scorer in Kyler Booher who came into the game averaging 25 points a game. Newton would hit 8 three-pointers with Booher getting 3 and his average by scoring 26 points and teammate Kyle Blundell hit on 5 three pointers but they fell short as Corey Jay got 32 inside with Daniel Foreman contributing 14 and the Patriots went on to a 62-49 win.
Jay got the Patriots on the board first with a deuce inside in what would become an insurmountable task for Newton, who had no strong post players that could defend the big man. The Patriots used a balanced attack in the first period with 5 different players scoring. Cameron Quinn sank a 15’ jumper, Sam Lindamood put in a half jam, Daniel Foreman drove strong to the hole and Josh Pipenger nailed a trey. Jay would pick up his second foul with 2:18 seconds to play and he would take a seat on the bench. Newton then went on a 5-2 run closing the gap to two points 13-11 after one quarter of play.
“When Corey picked up his second foul in the first quarter it was a roll of the dice whether to play him in the second quarter or not. But when Newton closed the gap to two it was a chance we had to take,” said Coach Sagester.
The gamble paid off as TV opened the second quarter with another inside feed to the post in what would become a 12-point outburst for Corey Jay as Newton failed to pick up his third foul.
Booher lead Newton with 6 points in the frame but Tri-Village took a 30-19 lead at the half.
In the third period the PATS would reel off 16 points with Foreman and Jay netting 6 each and Quinn added 4 and TV was able to increase their lead going into the final stanza 46-33.
Booher, quite for most of the game, came out aggressive to start the 4th period scoring nine quick points and at 5:15 had cut the margin to 48-42. A Foreman steal turned into a two points and back to back Jay baskets inside gave TV some breathing room at 2:52 to play holding a 54-42 lead. Although Booher would go for 13 in the quarter it wouldn’t be enough as Foreman went 4 for 4 from the line down the stretch and Sam Lindamood would cap off the win with a two handed jam giving TV a 62-49 win.
“It’s nice to get another conference win tonight,” commented Coach Sagester. “Every win helps build a little more confidence, we need to work on few things like our ball handling and decision making but… we played well.” “I thought Daniel gave us a great game tonight going for 14 points driving to the basket, hitting free throws down the stretch and… what can I say about Corey he was a man tonight and Newton didn’t have an answer for him inside.”
The Patriots are back in action tomorrow night in a non-league contest at Northridge.
Tri-Village also won the JV contest over Newton again led by Mark Wheeler with 17 points.
