| ANSONIA Tri-Village got off to a fast start this year going 3-0 when they fell on hard times against Fort Recovery last Saturday dropping their first game of the season. Coming into tonight’s game they were looking to extend their conference record to 3-0 to get back in the winning ways.
In the first quarter it looked liked they had picked up where they left off on Saturday as Ansonia scored the first 6 points of the game while the Patriots had trouble solving the extended Ansonia Tiger defense.
Daniel Foreman finally got the Patriots on the board with a drive to the hole at the 5:07 mark. Ansonia answered with a trey by Ben Barga. A Sam Lindamood free throw and another drive by Foreman left T-V trailing 9-5 but…Logan Beam nailed a baseline turnaround jumper as time expired in the quarter and the Tigers led 11-5.
The Tigers roared loudly to start the 2nd period when Niles Brown canned a 3-pointer followed by a Brad McEldowney jumper and the home team was up 16-4.
Senior Daniel Foreman stepped forward once again with a trey of his own and up to this point provided the only offense T-V could muster.
Ansonia kept on roaring with a Beisner lay-up and two more Tiger field goals and at the 3:49 mark led 22-8 the largest lead of the game for either team. Once again Foreman scored inside followed by a Sam Lindamood drive. But then Tri-Village found the hot hand from outside canning three-3-pointers one by Logan Brubaker and two by Sam Lindamood to close the gap to 26-21.
Brown would end the quarter as he started scoring a three-pointer for Ansonia. Daniel Foreman would be fouled shooting a three and converted two-of-three free throws to end the scoring for the quarter with Tri-Village trailing 29-23.
“We really didn’t play very well in the first half,” said coach Josh Sagester. “To be in the game is a testament to the character of this team.” “They continued to work hard and found a way to stay in the game.” “Daniel Foreman really stepped forward in that first half,” said Sagester.
In the third period senior Sam Lindamood came to life scoring the first 4 points to draw the Patriots to within two points. Eric Beisner then hit a trey and two more baskets over the next couple of minutes to try and keep the Patriots at bay. But Logan Brubaker hit a jumper followed by Lindamood and Brubaker treys to get within one 38-37 with 3:31 to play.
A Derrick Chowning offensive rebound put-back at 2:51 gave T-V their first lead of the game 39-38. Both teams traded baskets with T-V leading 41-40 and the end of three.
In the final stanza Ansonia would bring the heat on defense with a full court press and an extended half court defense trying to disrupt the Patriots.
With the Patriots leading 45-43 freshman Tyler Greer got past the defense took the ball hard to the goal for two while picking up the foul along the way. He was able to convert the free throw for a 3-point play and at 4:03 the PATS led 48-43.
The Tigers began to give up fouls sending the Patriots to the charity stripe. Tri-Village would sink 15-for-18 in the fourth period to keep the Tigers from gaining any ground despite two long-range treys by Brad McEldowney. The Patriots sank a total of 18-of-23 for the game compared to 5-for-12 for Ansonia which proved to be the difference in the game as Tri-Village pulled out a 62-51 victory.
With the win Tri-Village remains undefeated in the conference at 3-0 and 4-1 overall.
“This was a great win,” said an elated Coach Sagester. “To get a win here is big, not many teams are able to come into Ansonia and get a win on their home court.” We were blasé to start the game, didn’t move well on defense and couldn’t make many shots but we kept plugging away. We finally found the right combination, showed a lot of character and found a way to win,” commented Josh Sagester. “We now have to find a way to come out again tomorrow night and give the same kind of effort all over again.”
Sam Lindamood led the way with 25 points while Daniel Foreman and Logan Brubaker both contributed 15 points each. Brad McEldowney paced Ansonia with 18 points.
