The Jet Holiday Tournament concluded this evening with the Arcanum Trojans taking on Franklin Monroe Jets in the consolation game winning 70-66 in overtime.
The finals featured two good basketball teams with Versailles owning a 5-1 record while Tri-Village was 6-2. Versailles is the defending Jet Holiday tournament champion in fact they have dominated the tournament over the last 5 years with 4 championships.
The Patriots got on the board first on a David Barger post move inside at 5:37. Sam Lindamood would score the next 7 points on a drive, a trey and a 15’ jumper and at 2:17 Tri-Village lead 9-7. The two teams trade baskets but Versailles would hit a jumper as time expired to tie the game 11-11.
In the second period the Tigers scored 7 unanswered points 5 from Adam Barga and at 5:33 lead 18-11. Coach Josh Sagester took a timeout to settle his team. On the in bounds Lindamood hit a three-pointer followed by a Daniel Foreman jumper and when Barger sank two from the line the score was tied again 18-18 at the 5:03 mark.
The teams traded baskets until Forman hit 1-for-2 from the line and followed it up with a layup and T-V lead 23-20 which prompted Coach Dave Peltz to take timeout.
The remainder of the scoring in the first half would all be from the free throw line particularly Zac Richards. The big man made 4 straight trips to the line nailing 7-for-8 to give the Tigers a 27-23 lead at the half.
In the third period Versailles increased their lead to ten points 33-23 until freshman Tyler Greer would finally break the scoring drought for T-V with a trey at 3:21. The Patriots had gone the equivalent of 1 quarter without scoring (3:17 of the 2nd quarter) up to that point. Versailles responded with a trey and a layup and now lead by twelve 38-26.
The game would then be interrupted when a T-V player got sick which may have helped get the Patriots back on track giving them some rest and a chance to regain their composure.
Following the 5-minute delay T-V got a basket inside by Barger and a Mark Wheeler jumper from the corner to cut the lead to 38-30. The quarter would end with Versailles leading 40-30.
In the final stanza the depth of Versailles started to take it’s toll on the Patriots, as three players would foul out. Taylor and Logan Brubaker and Derrick Chowning all recorded 5 fouls. Down to the last player a sick Tyler Greer had to return to the ball game. T-V just didn’t have enough on this night as Versailles went on to record a 50-42 victory and take home the Jet Holiday Tournament Championship.
“It really felt like we wore them down,” said Coach Dave Peltz. “We rotated in our 4 post players and got some good minutes from Jayson White playing defense on Lindamood.” “It was an ugly win but a good win also as the two teams had contrasting styles of play.” “They (T-V) wanted to slow it down and we wanted to speed it up. “ “I think we did it just enough to disrupt them and our overall depth was just enough to get us the win.”
Coach Josh Sagester agreed that T-V didn’t want to get into a track meet with Versailles and wanted to keep the game at 50 or below and for the most part they achieved that goal.
“I thought we did one heck of job tonight defensively and I’m proud of my guys,” said Coach Sagester. “We hung in there tonight but didn’t get any breaks for some reason or another and it didn’t make a lot sense but we seemed to be the more physical team tonight.” “Everything is still intact for us we are 6-3 and our losses are to some pretty good basketball teams take nothing away from Versailles they are going to win a lot games this year. “Our kids got to play in a great atmosphere here tonight and they deserved it and it’s a good experience for our team, “ concluded Sagester.
The All Tournament Team was made up from Versailles; MVP Adam Barga, Jayson White and Jeremy Shardo, from Tri-Village Daniel Foreman and Sam Lindamood and rounding out the team from Arcanum Ty Cates.
The Patriots were led in scoring by Sam Lindamood with 13 points and Daniel Foreman contributed 11.
