Tri-Village coaches, players and fans celebrate on the court after shocking the #10 team in State the Ansonia Tigers.

New Madison, Ohio January 19, 2007

In the movie Talladega Nights, Ricky Bobby said, “that just happened,” as the Tri-Village Patriots used a little “shake n bake” to upset the previously unbeaten Ansonia Tigers in league play.

Ansonia came into the game ranked 10th in the state in division IV with an overall record of 10-2 and 6-0 in the conference and a big win last Saturday over the Versailles Tigers.

Tri-Village on the other hand was a team going in the opposite direction after dropping 6 straight games after starting the season off at 5-2. Going into tonight’s game the Patriots were 5-8 overall and 4-3 in conference action.

In the opening stanza the Patriots got on the board first with a Derrick Chowning lay-up. Logan Beam would tie the score with a short jumper at 7:01. Mark Wheeler shook free for a three-pointer at 6:43 to go up 5-2.

The Patriots were looking to extend their lead… but Brad McEldowney intercepted a pass at the top of the key. Brad raced to the other end to throw down a two handed jam but pulled down too hard on the rim and the ball bounced out.

Tri-Village escaped the big play and ran offense until David Barger canned a 10’ baseline jumper to go up 7-2. Moments later Mark Wheeler netted two free throws to go up 9-2.

Eric Beisner drew the Tigers closer with a long 21’ shot to make it 9-5 after one quarter of play.

Logan Brubaker stole the ball shortly into the 2nd quarter converting the lay-up to make it 11-5. Jesse Post reigned in a trey from the corner to get within three at 11-8.

T-V got two consecutive scores by Kendall Stutz and Tyler Greer to go up 15-8 at the six-minute mark. Ansonia then got another three this time from Niles Brown to make it 15-11.

The Tri-Village defense would then hold Ansonia scoreless the remainder of the quarter and add to their lead with Ryan Buck getting an offensive put back to finish the scoring with Tri-Village taking a 23-11 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter saw very few points scored and ended with the Patriots leading 27-18.

In the final stanza the Tigers roared loudly scoring the first 5 points, another three by Niles Brown and a Beisner jumper in the lane to get within four points trailing 27-23 and Tri-Village weathered the storm as the Tigers would get no closer the rest of the way.

Derrick Chowning scored inside drawing a foul and converting the charity toss to go up 31-23 at 2:35. But Niles Brown tossed in his 3rd trey of the night to keep the Tigers close 31-26.

It would then become a game of fouls shots at the Tigers would send the Patriots to the line the remainder of the game. Although the Patriots didn’t convert many it was enough for them to record a 38-26 league win.

Afterwards coach Josh Sagester commented; “This was a great win for out team.”

“They (the kids) work hard and played as a team… it was total team effort. We shared the basketball, everyone touched the ball and everyone contributed in this victory.”

“We went back to the basics after the losing streak and decided to play a more controlled game. I thought the St. Henry game last Saturday really helped build our kid’s confidence in the close three-point loss. They realized that we could do this if we played this way and it worked for us tonight.”

“Defense was the key, everybody did their job. Now we need to repeat this performance tomorrow night as we travel to Newton who is 6-1 in the conference after their big win tonight over Bethel,” added Sagester.

Niles Brown from Ansonia led all scorers tonight with 11 points. Mark Wheeler paced Tri-Village with 10 points. Logan Brubaker swiped 3 steals and Tyler Greer pulled in 9 big rebounds.

In the reserve game Tri-Village also was victorious as Troy Pearson led the way with 12 points.
