The Tri-Village Patriots came into tonight’s game riding a 4 game road-losing streak and playing in the Beehive is not an easy task. Both teams held identical league records at 4-2 with the winner still maintaining an outside shot at title.
The Patriots got on the board first when Mark Wheeler got inside for two. Bethel would take the lead off Tony Phillips free throws as the Bees went to the line on 3 consecutive trips down the floor to go up 3-2 at 6:14.
Tyler Greer gave the PATS the lead back with a lay-up…but Phillips rained in a three (one of three in the quarter) to go back up 6-4. Both teams exchanged baskets for the next few minutes but Phillips with the hot hand hit back-to-back treys and Bethel took a 19-16 first quarter lead.
Mark Wheeler drew TV within one with a three ball… again Phillips returned the favor to keep the Bees out in front as they rolled out to a halftime lead of 31-26.
In the third period Bethel extended their lead to nine points. Mark Wheeler at the 4:08 mark got the PATS to within six points… but Phillips would sting the PATS one more time from behind the arch for his 5th three-pointer on the night. The Bees held a 46-36 third quarter lead.
In the final stanza the Bees would score the first seven points for their largest lead of the game 53-36. TV then went full court to try and fight their way back into the game eventually getting to within seven again when Ryan Buck scored inside and converted a free throw at the 3:20 mark.
Bethel answered with a trey from Ryan Mayes his 2nd of the game and from there they would close it out from the free throw line taking a 66-53league victory.
Tony Phillips led all scorers with 30 points and the only double-digit scorer for Bethel. Tri-Village placed three players in double figures led by Mark Wheeler with 15, Tyler Greer 11 and Kendall Stutz with 10 points.
The win keeps Bethel in the hunt at 5-2 in the conference while Tri-Village falls to 4-3 in conference play and 5-7 overall.
