Mark Wheeler connected onf 4 treys on his way to a career high of 28 points in a win over Fairlawn.

Fairlawn High School – January 27, 2007

When the Tri-Village Patriots Boys Basketball team goes on the road the result usually isn’t good, in fact the only game they won on the road this year was at National Trail early in the season. The game was decided late in the 4th period… this after having beat the same team by 40 points a week earlier at home.

It looked like history was going to repeat itself as the Patriots were knotted at the half and barely holding a lead in the 4th period. Tri-Village’s Mark Wheeler had the hot hand and made good with a career high 28 points… combine that with timely free throw shooting down the stretch and TV was able get a needed road win 63-55 against a stubborn Fairlawn Jets Team.

Fairlawn raced out to a 7-2 lead as their big man James Apples accounted for all seven points. But Seniors Derrick Chowning and Mark Wheeler responded with Derrick scoring 4 and Mark 11 points in the opening period. With TV trailing the Jets 10-6 Mark connected on three straight trips down the floor from behind the arch, the last at the buzzer to give the Patriots at 15-10 lead.

Derrick Chowning extended T-V’s lead to 17-10 to start the 2nd quarter and it looked like the Patriots found their groove. Fairlawn within a matter of minutes tied the game scoring seven unanswered points on a trey, a stick back and then converting two scores off Patriot turnovers to make it 17-17 at 5:27.

The two teams then traded baskets going in at the half knotted 25 – 25.

In the third period T-V got on the board first on a drive by Tyler Greer and was followed up by Wheeler on a stick back to go up 29-25. Fairlawn as they did early in the game fed the ball to Apple who then scored six of the next eight points to give Fairlawn the lead again 33-29 at 5:20.

But the Patriot would buckle down on the defensive end holding the Jets scoreless for the next three minutes while generating their own run. The Patriots reeled off twelve straight points mostly inside on drives to the hoop or offensive rebounds for put backs, Chowning, Greer, Wheeler and Ryan Buck all scored in the run.

The Patriots would then lead after three quarters 43-35.

The final stanza would be long and ugly as the fouling started early and 30 free throws would be shot in the period. The Patriots had maintain mostly an 8 to 10 point lead throughout but Fairlawn would throw in (3) three-pointers in a matter of 30 seconds to make it close but T-V would seal it at the line to record a 63-55 non-conference win.

The Patriots shot 18-for-27 from the free throw line as a team, Mark Wheeler finished with 28 points to lead all scorers in the game. Tyler Greer contributed 13 for TV and James Apple led Fairlawn with 15 points.
