The Jet Holiday Tournament wasn’t kind to the Patriots in 2006. Going in T-V held a 5-2 record with aspirations of adding a tourney title. After a disappointing loss in the opening round the PATS were playing in the consolation game against Franklin Monroe
On this night T-V competed hard but it all came to a disappointing end as a last second desperation shot rattled in and bounced out last night giving F-M a hard fought 53-51 victory.
“We need to regroup and put this behind us,” said dejected Coach Josh Sagester. “I really liked our chances coming in to this tournament but we just didn’t get the job done. Our kids didn’t show up yesterday… today they competed and played hard but we have to find a way to win the close games.”
The Patriots went up 4-2 early on in the first period when Derrick Chowning finished one inside. Franklin Monroe then went on an 11 point run... 5 points on back-to-back baskets the latter a three-pointer at the 3:00 minute mark from Bill Taylor and F-M led 13-4.
The Patriots got off to a slow start the previous night and never really challenged…but they closed out the quarter with a flurry with baskets from Tyler Greer, Ryan Buck and Mark Wheeler to close the gap 13-10.
In the second period Tyler Greer and Ryan Buck helped to push the Patriots out to a 17-13 lead. Ryan finished an old-fashioned three-point play inside to tie the score and Greer scored four straight points to put the Patriots up 17-13 at 6:22.
FM answered the 13-point run from T-V with a trey on a second chance shot by Richie Miller killing the Patriot momentum. F-M then built up a 28-23 lead… but Tyler Greer was able to knock down a three-pointer with 3 seconds to give the PATS some momentum at the half trailing just 28-26.
The third quarter turned out to be the key in the game as T-V struggled to find any offensive scoring. With the exception of Derrick Chowning and Ryan Buck hitting inside baskets the Patriots were stifled by the Jet’s defense. Despite the offensive woes the Patriots held FM to just 9 points while falling behind 37-30.
In the final stanza the Jets increased their lead to 39-30 when sophomore Austin Pressly scored on a backdoor cut to match their largest lead of the game.
Tri-Village then applied full court pressure and fought back with Tyler Greer knocking down a jumper and Ryan Buck going for two straight baskets inside to make it 39-36.
The remainder of the quarter was a battle and TV came all the way back with 41 seconds left to play when Mark Wheeler tied the game at 51-51 from the free throw line.
On the ensuing inbounds play it look like Tri-Village forced a turnover but the Jets maintained the basketball and held the ball for a last second shot.
The shot was off and Derrick Chowning ripped down the rebound but was stripped by Grant Shellabarger who put in a lay-up with 5 seconds to play.
TV then in bounded the ball to Tyler Greer taking it to the top of the key… he let go of a floating jumper… the ball rattled in but popped out as the buzzer sounded to end the game.
Coach Sagester commented afterwards the keys to the game were second chance opportunities and turnovers that allowed FM to convert into easy scores.
“We have to rebound better and take care of the basketball to win games.”
“Our kids played hard tonight I can’t fault their effort but we need some of our kids to step up and make plays. Tyler Greer played a nice game and Ryan Buck gave us some good minutes and played his best game,” added Sagester.
“Our road ahead isn’t easy with a tough league schedule ahead starting with Covington next week, so as a team we need to prepare ourselves mentally for this stretch of games,” concluded Sagester.
The loss drops Tri-Village to 5-4 overall but more importantly they still maintain a league record of 4-1.
The Patriots shot 50% for the game 21-of-42 compared to 40% for the Jets but lost the battle of the boards and committed 17 turnovers. Franklin Monroe shot 9-for-11 from the free throw line compared to 5-for-8 for Tri-Village.
Tyler Greer led the way for the PATS with 15 points with Buck and Wheeler adding 13 each.
Grant Shellabarger and Logan Halderman led FM each scoring 16 points.
