Logan Brubaker thrilled the crowd with a halfcourt shot at the buzzer in the third quarter that helped TV record a 53-47 win.

February 9, 2007 – Pitsburg, OH

Tri-Village traveled to FM to take on the Jets for the second time this season. In the first meeting the Jets were able to squeak out a 53-51 win.

In that match-up Grant Shellabarger and Logan Halderman did most of the damage, each scoring 16 points in the affair.

The game plan for the Patriots was to try and limit the duo from getting touches and to keep them in check. Tri-Village was very effective in executing this plan as the two scored just 9 points in the game giving the Patriots a 53-47 conference win.

Offensively the Patriots were fairly balanced with big quarters from different players. The first quarter was all Derrick Chowning as the “Big Man” scored 12 of his game high 13 points in the opening stanza for a 14-10 TV lead.

TV struggled a bit offensively in the second period with Ryan Buck, 4 points and Kendall Stutz, 2 points contributing to the Patriot’s 20 total team points.

Franklin Monroe adjusted to the triangle and two defense with other players providing needed scoring as sophomore Lane Lucas hit two three-pointers with 8 points in the quarter along with Brett Robison four and Ethan Nealeigh two points to take a 24-20 halftime advantage.

The third quarter turned out to be a barnburner this time the TV guards stepped up their game. Logan Brubaker pulled the Patriots within three at 6:06 with a free throw and a bucket early on.

Mark Wheeler battling illness and playing very few minutes gave the Patriots a boost in the middle of the period with three straight scores including a three-pointer to tie the game 30-30 at 2:53.

Lucas answered for FM with his 3rd of four treys on the night. A Chowning free throw followed by a Brubaker short jumper tied the score again at 33 with 11 seconds to play.

Franklin Monroe missed with 4 seconds to play but an opportunistic Robison was able to tip the ball in to give FM what looked like a huge momentum play to go up 35-33… but Brubaker pulled out some heroics of his own launching a shot 10’ beyond the half court line rattling it home knocking the down the high flying Jets momentum as Tri-Village now lead at the end of three 36-35.

The final stanza saw the lead exchange back and forth a few times, at 5:34 a David Barger score inside gave the Patriots a 41-40 lead that they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the game.

Logan Brubaker followed with a drive for two points but Lucas for FM made a great tip play with the ball up-court to himself for a lay-up to make it 43-42 with 3:08 to play.

At 2:36 the Jets fouled Barger who would net both free throws, in fact he would go 5-of-6 down the stretch to help seal the victory as the Patriots came away from the Hangar with a league victory 53-47.

“Unbelievable, is the only way I can describe this win,” said Coach Josh Sagester after the game. “Our kids are preparing themselves for tournament and we have different kids stepping forward when we need them just as they did in tonight’s game.”

“We got a big game from Logan Brubaker, we know he can give us offense and tonight he took advantage of his opportunities and his shot at the end of the third was a huge boost to our team.”

“Derrick Chowning played big in the first quarter, Mark Wheeler gave us a boost in the second half and David Barger was big at the line down the stretch… those guys stepped forward as well,” added Sagester.

“I also want to commend Kendall Stutz and Tyler Greer on doing a phenomenal job in the triangle and two defense in helping shut down Shellabarger and Halderman. They knew that some of their offense would be sacrificed due to their defensive assignments and they never complained but stepped up and got the job done.”

“Ryan Buck really gave us a good second quarter, all of our kids are contributing which is why this basketball team is playing so well now winning 5 of our last 6 games. We want to finish the regular season on high next week for our seniors on senior night and then get ready for the tournament.”
