The Tri-Village Boys basketball team squared off against the Greenville Green Wave and the house was full for the first ever match-up for the two inter-county schools.
Both teams started slowly, Patriot Mark Wheeler kept T-V close hitting a jumper and a lay-up at 4:20 with Greenville holding a 5-4 lead. The Green Wave would then race out to a 13-6 first quarter lead.
Greenville opened the second period draining a trey to go up 16-6 as the Patriots continued the trend of falling behind early.
Tri-Village stormed back as David Barger hit a baseline jumper, Tyler Greer finished a drive, Derrick Chowning converted an old-fashioned three-point play and Logan Brubaker capped the run with a trey to close the gap at 18-16 with 2:35 to play.
Greenville weathered the run and got the hot hand as they hit on 4 three-pointers in the period the last with 1.3 seconds to play to go up 31-19.
In the second half the Green Wave built up a 21-point lead as the Patriots continued to struggle offensively. Tyler Greer netted 9 of his 15 points to try and keep them close as they trailed 48-33 at the end of three quarters.
In the final stanza Tri-Village employed full court pressure to try and get back in the game. The Patriots cut the lead to 8 points a couple of times... but couldn’t get any closer and in the process 3 Patriot players would foul out in the contest… the team never conceded or quit fighting till the end.
The night however, belonged to Greenville as they celebrated “Hall of Fame” night in style with a 70-58 win handing the Patriots their 4th consecutive loss.
Afterwards Coach Josh Sagester said “We looked intimidated and came out on our heels, not making excuses but we lost a game last night in overtime and that took something out of us. I thought once we realized we could play with them we started to come back but we can’t get off to a slow start like we have be doing in the first half. Our kids played hard but we have to do it for a whole game.”
“The road doesn’t get much easier as the next stretch is going to be hard, it won’t be easy with Bethel and St. Henry next week… then Ansonia and Newton both league games on the same weekend, we need to step up.”
Greenville won the battle of the boards 36-23 and committed seven fewer turnovers then T-V. Both teams shot 33% from the floor in the first half but the Wave went 9-for-10 from the free throw line. In the second half both teams shot 58% from the floor but Greenville made more free throws. For the game Greenville shot 13-for-27 from the line and T-V shot just 4-for-12.
