The 2006-2007 Tri-Village Boys Basketball Team will be remembered for accomplishing a lot in a topsy-turvy season. The team started off with good wins against Arcanum and National Trail on the opening weekend of play.

In the second weekend TV traveled to Twin Valley South and fell hard in league play. The next night wasn’t any better losing to a strong Fort Recovery team.

Standing at 2-2 the Patriots were able to shake it off for three straight wins over Tri-County North, National Trail and Miami East all conference wins.

The Patriots then entered the Jet Holiday tournament with a 5-2 record and looked to be on a roll. The tournament however wasn’t kind to the Patriots as they fell hard to Arcanum in the first round and then lost a heart breaker to Franklin Monroe in the consolation game.

Sporting a 4-1 conference record the Patriots traveled to Covington in a key game against an experienced team. Tri-Village looked to be in control most of the game however, they squandered the lead and Covington hit a last second shot to put the game in overtime. Covington would eventually squeak by the Patriots and deliver a piercing blow to their confidence.

The following night Tri-Village traveled to Greenville in a big inter-county contest and was unable to get a win at Greenville as they still were reeling from the loss the night before.

Hard times continued for Tri-Village with a conference loss to Bethel and St. Henry on the same weekend dropping their overall record to 6-7 and 4-3 in conference play.

Even though Tri-Village lost to St. Henry 35-32 it would be a pivotal point in the season. Coach Josh Sagester was able to get his team all on the same page buying into his system of a more methodical offensive style, valuing the basketball and making each possession count.

Next up was the Ansonia Tigers and the Patriots deliberate style was effective enough for them to record a 38-26 win ending their 6 game losing streak. The following night they traveled to Newton another league frontrunner and left with a disappointing 44-36 loss.

The Patriots then went on an amazing run finishing out their regular season with 5 straight wins over Fairlawn, Mississinawa Valley, Northridge, Franklin Monroe and Bradford to run their regular season record to 12-8 overall and 8-4 in conference play.

TV then entered post season tournament action and took care of Southeastern then Franklin Monroe. Tri-Village the locked horns with Ridgeville Christian for a sectional title as both teams played to a tie in regulation… but the Patriots were able to win a thriller in overtime taking a sectional title.
The Tri-Village 2006-2007 team was only the 5th in history to make it to districts. However they ran into a very hot Houston team who had already upset the number one
D IV team in the state the Russia Raiders. The Patriots got off to a slow start in the opening period and was never able to recover and their season ended in the districts.

Tri-Village has had many good basketball teams over the years many with go to players. Arguably this team may have accomplished more with less than any other team as they etched their piece of history as sectional champs and district runner-ups ending the season with a 14-10 record.

Mark Wheeler and Derrick Chowning reflected on the feat they had accomplished along the way. “When you consider the fact we never won a game in the sixth-eighth grade and had very little varsity experience until last year, it makes this moment so special,” said Mark Wheeler.

“We never gave up,” said Derrick Chowning. “We kept working on our fundamentals, I worked harder on my inside post play and of course it didn’t hurt that I continued to grow,” added Chowning.

When asked about the dramatic turn around of the team after losing 6 games in row Mark Wheeler responded, “We (the team) got together talked and regrouped getting on the same page as the coach.” “Our team bought into the system and realized after the “St. Henry game that we could play a controlled game and give ourselves a chance to win, said Wheeler.”

The result was an 8 game winning streak while winning 9 out the last 11 games and an unbelievable finish to the season.
