The Tri-Village Boys basketball team hosted the newest Cross County Conference member the Miami East Vikings. Although East was winless coming in their losses have been to good basketball teams. Covington, Monroe, Bethel and Ansonia all combined have posted a record of 19-5 going into tonight’s game. Every report on this team was they play hard and never quit and a dangerous team to play.
“I told our kids we needed to come out and play hard and not let this team get any confidence early on,” said Coach Josh Sagester.
In the opening stanza Tri-Village came out with some very tight man-to-man defense and played it well. In fact they were able to hold Miami East to just one field goal in the period.
Offensively the Patriots showed their balance and versatility as all seven Patriot players who played in the game scored in the opening period to give T-V a 14 2 lead.
“The boys really responded setting the tone early executing what we asked them to do and it got us off to a good start,” said Sagester.
In the second period the two teams would basically trade baskets. Mark Wheeler scored seven points in the period and T-V lead at the half 25-11.
“We really played a good half of basketball,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “Our team defense was outstanding and we made Miami East earn their points.”
In the second half the Patriots had a slight lapse as Miami East slipped senior post player Joe Taylor out past the top of the key who dropped in two straight treys and within minutes Miami East had narrowed the lead to 25-17.
With a slight defensive adjustment the Patriots got it rolling again as they pounded the ball inside to Derrick Chowning who scored 6 of his 10 points in the period. The Patriots also attacked the aggressive man defense with Tyler Greer and Mark Wheeler both scoring off drives to the basket and T-V held a 41-26 third period lead.
In the final stanza the Patriots maintained their focus and intensity despite senior Nick Kirk dropping in (3) three-pointers to try and keep Miami East in the game.
The final stanza was much like the first, as all seven T-V players would get on the scoreboard to close out a total team victory by the score of 54-41.
“Tonight we got a great team effort, everyone contributed both defensively and offensively,” said Sagester. “We attacked their defense and got the majority of our scoring inside by pounding it in, or off drives instead of settling for the 20’ shot,” added Sagester.
“It was a good night for Logan Brubaker he started us off with a drive to the basket and finished and repeated it several times throughout the game.” “Defensively he held their leading scoring to zero field goals in the first half and he finished with just 4 points.”
The Patriots were led in scoring tonight by Mark Wheeler with 15 points while Derrick Chowning recorded a double double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Tri-Village is now 5-2 overall and 4-1 in conference play and will be back in action next Friday in the Jet Tourney.
