Tri-Village crowned Hope Baumbach Queen and J.D. West King during Homecoming festivities at "The Battleground."

February 2, 2007 – New Madison, OH

There were a few things to be excited about tonight at Tri-Village High School. It was homecoming festivities and the Patriots were playing high school basketball at “The Battleground.”

Tri-Village enjoyed the homecoming ceremony and the crowing of King J.D. West and Queen Hope Baumbach before the game and celebrated in grand style watching the Patriots knock off another teams CCC title hopes.

The Tri-Village boy’s basketball team after losing a few key games on the road this year took on the role of being “the spoiler” so to speak. “When we realized we were out of the conference race, we knew we had to start getting better for tournament at the end of the year,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “If our role is to be the spoiler, then so be it, we are trying to build momentum for post season play.”

With that mindset two weeks ago they knocked off the Ansonia Tigers from the top spot and tonight upset second place Mississinawa Valley by recording a 47-36 victory.

Tri-Village showed early their game plan on the first possession isolating David Barger on the block and he converted for two. Tri-Village would spend the first period attacking the inside… but the Blackhawk’s were successful in knocking down some outside jumpers of their own to keep it close after one period of play trailing 11-10.

In the second quarter the Patriots continued to take the ball at the Blackhawk’s. A key play by Tyler Greer on a drive to the basket garnered a second foul on Wes Gelhaus and Coach Vaughn gave his big man a seat on the bench. “I told our kids to take it to them inside and they executed,” commented Sagester.

With Wes out of the game Ryan Dickey put up another 5 points early in the quarter to match his 5 in the previous stanza to keep MV close tying the score 15-15 at 5:38

After that is was all Tri-Village shutting down the Blackhawk’s for the remainder of the period while scoring 11 straight points. The run started on a Barger kick to Wheeler for three followed by a 15’ jumper by Barger. They went back inside to Derrick Chowning followed by a Wheeler drive for two.

The final play come from an offensive tip in at the buzzer by Chowning that energized the home crowd while giving the Patriots momentum to take with them into the half.

To start the second half Tri-Village came back out and showed patience taking off nearly 2 minutes off the clock running through their offensive set 5 times before finding Barger isolated again on the block who made a nice spin move to the basket for two.

“I saw our team grow more tonight with their decision-making and felt that initial set was one of the keys to game to start the second half,” said Coach Josh Sagester.

Tri-Village continued to bottle up the middle and limited Wes Gelhaus touches and cutting off dribble penetration-causing MV to settle for the outside jump shot. T-V used this to their advantage and at the end of three led 32-20.

In the final stanza consecutive scores by Kendall Stutz and Derrick Chowning at the 4:13 mark gave TV their largest lead of the game 40-24.

With the lead TV used clock for the remainder of the game forcing MV to send them to the free throw line. “We struggled somewhat this year as a team at the line,” said Coach Sagester. “Tonight we executed well (14-for-18) had we done that in some key games earlier in the year we would have a few more victories.”

Tyler Greer went 8-for-8 from the line to lead the Patriots down the stretch as they closed the door on the Blackhawk’s for a 47-36 conference win.

“It was a heck of a win for this team, I can’t say enough about how well they played tonight,” said Coach Sagester. Our big men defended well tonight inside holding Gelhaus to just 3 points. “Derrick Chowning did a yeoman’s job inside with 10 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.”

“We got contributions from everyone, as a team we took good open shots and had good balanced scoring,” added Sagester.

Tri-Village was led in scoring by Mark Wheeler with 15 tied for game high honors with Ryan Dickey from Mississinawa. Tyler Greer contributed 12 and Derrick Chowning ended with 11 points.

The Patriots now stand 8-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play. They will be looking to get to 500 tomorrow night traveling to Northridge in non-conference action.

In JV action Tri-Village pulled off a 50-36 victory.
