The Tri-Village Boys basketball team ventured out into the frigid arctic temperatures to take on the Northridge Polar Bears. Road games have been a struggle for the team this year and riding a two game win streak the Patriots were determined to keep the momentum going forward and withstood a late surge by the Bears to make it three games in a row with a 46-39 win.
The Patriots opened up a 6-0 lead, 5 points on back-to-back baskets and a throw by David Barger along with a Tyler Greer free throw before Northridge scored at 3:30.
The inside dominance continued in the quarter with Derrick Chowning and Ryan Buck also scoring off the block to give the PATS at 10-4 first quarter lead.
Tri-Village continued to get inside drawing fouls sending Buck, Kendall Stutz and Chowning to the line on four straight possessions. Buck connected on 3-for-4, Stutz 1-of-2 and Chowning 2-of-2 in the stretch. Northridge however got the hot hand outside with two straight three’s and the lead was 16-10.
Northridge scored two more times in the second frame to get Northridge closer trailing at the half 19-14.
To start the second half TV went back to the formula that worked before with Barger inside for two. Mark Wheeler with just one point in the first half followed that with a jumper outside. Then it went back inside to Chowning for two and then followed by a kick out to Greer for three and the Patriots had stormed out to a 28-14 lead.
Northridge however wasn’t about to fold and pressured full court trying to get the game at a faster pace. They were successful in doing that over the remainder of the quarter cutting the Tri-Village lead in half to 33-27.
Northridge came out firing with a three ball to start the final stanza and were down just three points. But Mark Wheeler answered back with his own trey and another Barger score inside gave the Patriots a 38-30 lead at 6:20.
Each time Tri-Village looked like they had the game in control Northridge would get a key basket to make a little run. But Wheeler again scored from behind the arch at 4:49 to make it 41-33.
Northridge then pulled off a 4-point play on their next possession with a three and throw followed by a steal to close within two points 41-39 at 2:25.
The Patriots then spread the floor, Northridge applying lots of outside pressure allowed TV to find Barger on a cut across the lane. David then hit a 10’ turnaround to give the Patriot’s a four-point cushion with 1:21 left to play.
TV turned away the Bears on their next possession forcing them to foul and Tri-Village won it at the free throw line down the stretch to record at 46-39 non-conference road win.
“This was an important win for out team tonight,” said coach Josh Sagester. “We won back-to-back games on the same weekend and on the road and really gutted it out tonight.” “We showed mental toughness tonight especially after a very physical game last night.” “They (Northridge) applied a lot of pressure on our guards and I thought we did a nice job of handling it and finding the open man.”
“I thought we got some big senior shots from Mark Wheeler late in the game,” added Sagester. “David Barger played an outstanding game tonight, he did things we know and expect him to do.”
Wheeler and Barger paced TV with 13 points each tonight and Derrick Chowning pulled down 18 rebounds.
TV’s record is now 9-9 overall and 6-4 in conference play with another big conference game next Friday at Franklin Monroe and then they will wrap up the regular season on Saturday for senior night with the Bradford Railroaders coming to town.
