February 23, 2007 - Vandalia, Ohio
The Tri-Village boy’s basketball team faced Southeastern in the first round of the sectional tournament at Vandalia Butler High School.
Both teams going in have been known to be very deliberate and patient offensively so there weren’t many expectations that it would be a high scoring affair.
In the opening quarter both teams were true to their nature getting into half court sets and running through their offenses. The Trojans drew first blood on a three from Kyle VanHoose. T-V put their first points on the board at 4:13 on a Logan Brubaker drive.
A minute later Mark Wheeler picked up two off an assist from Tyler Greer and the Patriots led for the first time 4-3. Two inside baskets from Derrick Chowning and Ryan Buck followed and TV led 8-5 at 1:53.
Southeastern then sank a 15 footer… but Logan Brubaker nailed two free throws with seconds left to give the Patriots a 10-7 lead after one period of play.
David Barger opened the second period with two in the lane and Southeastern answered with a deuce by Eli Pavlotis to make it 12-9. Neither team would score over the next 4 minutes until Tyler Greer got a steal and took it coast to coast for two to go up 14-9 at 2:34.
Southeastern got a break as a ball going out of bounds was tipped back in under the basket to 6’6” senior Nathan Bern. Bern was fouled on his shot, then converted an old fashioned three with the throw and the Trojans closed to 14-12.
Both teams then traded baskets and TV led by just two at the half 16-14.
“I thought our kids got off to a slow start, part of it can be attributed to jitters playing in the tournament,” said Coach Josh Sagester.
If it was a case of the “jitters” they left them in the locker room to start the second half as Tri-Village literally raced out to a 22-14 lead before Southeastern called a timeout. The run came from steals by Mark Wheeler and Logan Brubaker while finishing on the other end the floor.
Southeastern’s timeout proved good as they got a basket to slow the Patriots down to make it 22-16. The Patriots then went inside on their next two possessions for scores but the Trojans answered each time. The third quarter ended on a Buck stick-back giving Tri-Village a 30-25 lead.
In the final stanza it was all Tri-Village as they spread the floor pulling the Trojans out and then dissected them apart off the dribble drive and dish. T-V ran off eight points over the next five plus minutes while holding Southeastern scoreless to go up 38-25.
The Trojans finally got a trey at the two-minute mark but it was too late as the Patriots advance to round two with a 42-30 win.
Afterwards coach Josh Sagester said, “we maintained our composure tonight and didn’t get too excited about the pace of the game and let the game come to us. Our kids took what they gave us and played well as a team. It was a great team win.”
“I though our man defense was solid and Logan Brubaker did a nice job on his assignment in shutting down their leading scorer, in fact he never scored in the game.”
“Our big’s played well tonight the guard play was solid and we are moving on to the second round,” concluded Sagester.
For the second year in a row the Patriots will play Franklin Monroe for a third time as they advanced with a 42-39 win over Xenia Christian. That game will be played on Wednesday February 28, 8pm at Vandalia High School.
