The Tri-Village Boys basketball team was looking forward to getting back to the friendly confines of “The Battleground” after playing 5 straight road games. The road wasn’t kind as the Patriots dropped the last 5 games in a row.
Going into tonight’s game TV was undefeated at home but facing a stiff challenge from the “MAC” conference in the St. Henry Redskins. It would also be a night to honor past Patriot greats into the athletic “Hall Of Fame.”
St. Henry known for raining in the three-ball started the game off with a trey and it looked like it was going to be a long night. The Patriots however came out and showed patience on the offensive end of the floor trying to establish tempo and to keep the game in check.
In fact the strategy was working fine when Mark Wheeler dropped one in behind the arch at the 2:18 mark and T-V held a 7-5 lead. St. Henry would then end the quarter as they started with the second three-pointer of the game to take a 1st quarter lead 10-7.
Tyler Greer started the Patriots in the 2nd period with a trey… but St. Henry was quick to answer with one of their own. Greer then followed up with a drive for two at 5:46. St. Henry then scored two straight baskets inside until Kendall Stutz got one going to the hole to make it 17-14.
St. Henry then knocked down their 4th trey of the half to go up 20-14 at 3:05. The Tri-Village defense would then stiffen to shut out the Redskins the rest of the half.
On the offensive end Greer knocked in his second three-pointer, David Barger got an inside score and with 5.8 seconds left Stutz would drop in a bomb to give TV a 22-20 halftime lead.
The third quarter turned out to be all St. Henry as they started to bang away inside. In fact they went to the line 5 times converting 7-for-10 along with one fielder to go up 29-22.
Holding the lead at 29-22 and the Patriots sitting back in their zone defense St. Henry decided to pull the ball out to try and get TV to go man to man. They held the ball for nearly 3 minutes but turned the ball over with 10 seconds to go and Mark Wheeler was able to get into the lane for a score while drawing the foul to pull the Patriots to 29-24 at the end of three quarters of play.
In the final stanza Tyler Greer got a lay-up to make it 29-26… but St. Henry went back to holding the ball this time for nearly 4 1/2 minutes. Another turnover helped give TV the ball back and this time Kendall Stutz converted to make it 29-28 at 3:01.
St. Henry knocked down a short jumper to go up 31-28 at 2:26… but Mark Wheeler converted two free throws and the Patriots trailed 31-30 in the game.
Playing aggressive defense with time running down TV put St. Henry on the line and they went up 33-30. Another Kendall Stutz drive to the hoop drew the Patriots back to within one once again, down 33-32 with less than a minute to play.
Then with 34 seconds to play TV sent St. Henry to the line one more time and much like before they were true to make it 35-32. The Patriots were unable to score down the stretch and came up short once again on the scoreboard to drop their 6th game in row.
St. Henry got to the free throw line 17 times making 11 while TV went 2-for-3.
Tri-Village is back in action next week with a double league weekend taking on undefeated league foe Ansonia Friday night at home and then at Newton on Saturday.
