December 15 New Madison, Ohio
The Tri-Village Boys basketball team was looking to come out aggressive tonight in their league match-up with Tri-County North and set the tone early to try and erase bad starts and two losses the previous week.
The Patriots opened play by pounding the ball inside to David Barger who made a reverse spin drawing the foul converting a hard 3-point play to give the PATS a lead they would maintain the rest of the way.
The Patriots continued to look inside which then opened up the outside and sophomore Tyler Greer would find the mark behind the arch. The Pats would get scoring from Chowning, Brubaker and Stutz with Barger finishing the quarter as he started with a half hook inside to give T-V a 14-6 advantage.
In the second period the Patriots got it rolling using a balanced inside-outside game. Tyler Greer nailed two more three-pointers while Derrick Chowning scored three consecutive inside baskets and at the 1:39 point the Patriots lead 35-15.
In the quarter Kendall Stutz also showed his versatility with a drive to score and knocking down an outside jumper and the Patriots would own a 37-18 halftime lead.
“Before the game I told our kids that we needed to assert ourselves early, play aggressive and take it to them,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “Our defense was outstanding in the first half and Logan Brubaker did an excellent job of holding their main weapon Ethan Blankenship to zero field goals in the half.”
The Patriots came out flat in the third quarter and the Panthers took advantage scoring eight straight points to get within 37-26. It was again David Barger who would jump-start the Patriot's inside on a turn-around jumper to break the 4-minute scoring drought.
Senior Mark Wheeler quite much of the first half erupted for 8 points in the final two minutes of the third period with two-treys, one as time expired to give the Patriots a 49-31 lead.
In the final stanza T-V’s aggressiveness started to take a toll as fouls mounted sending Tri-County North to the free throw line numerous times.
TCN would continue to play hard and hustle to the end but the cushion the Patriots established early on was too much for them to overcome as Tri-Village finished out the game with a 61-47 win.
After the game, Coach Sagester said; “This was a nice win, especially after the tough weekend we had last week… it was a great team effort. “Our Big’s David Barger and Derrick Chowning controlled the inside game and Tyler Greer opened the door for us from the outside knocking down those early jumpers.”
“Really everyone chipped in… Logan Brubaker did a nice job for us defensively, Mark Wheeler hit some big shots for us in the third period and Kendall Stutz gave us good minutes… he is coming along well… it’s a learning process,” added Coach Sagester.
For the game Derrick Chowning led the way with 17 points and Tyler Greer netted 14.
The win increases T-V’s record to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in conference play. They are back in action Tuesday night at National Trail.
In JV action the Patriots were led in scoring by Tyler Evans with 11 points all in the second half but they fell short again.
