Senior Derrick Chowning had a huge night recording a double double 21 points and 19 rebounds but it wasn't enough on this night.

December 8, 2006 – WEST ALEXANDRIA

Tri-Village traveled to West Alexander tonight for a key match-up with Twin Valley South for a boys Cross County Conference (CCC) varsity basketball game

It was a game that would feature two contrasting styles. Twin Valley South a heavily guard oriented team who likes to spread the floor, penetrate and kick for the long three.

Tri-Village wanted to play a more controlled half court game and try to pound it inside and slow down the Panthers.

In order to play this type of game Tri-Village needed to get out to a good start and gain the tempo and control. “At the beginning of the game we didn’t rebound defensively very well and South came up with loose balls which enabled them to get out to an early lead,” said Coach Josh Sagester.

In fact TVS would run out to a 12-2 first quarter lead but the Patriots would claw back mostly behind Derrick Chowning with six points. Ryan Buck would add two inside and Kendall Stutz two on a drive but the Patriots trailed 14-10 at the end of one quarter of play.

In the second quarter a David Barger stick-back drew the Patriots within two points but they would get no closer in the game. The big momentum shift came on a missed TV rebound that found it’s way into junior Steve Summers hands who would launch a trey and pick up a foul to complete a four-point play. South then rocketed out to a 30-18 lead.

Seniors Mark Wheeler and Derrick Chowning helped get the Patriots closer before the end of the half as Mark nailed two treys and Derrick again came up big inside with two goals but TV still trailed 36-29.

Coach Sagester commented, “every time we made a run it seemed like South would get a key rebound, loose ball or make a big shot.”

In the third quarter Derrick Chowning got the Patriots rolling with a big three point play inside. He would follow this up with a tip-in to draw Tri-Village closer 38-34.

The Panthers however would strike it big from the outside as they would made 3 straight treys to close out the third quarter with a 54-40 lead.

In the final stanza South would maintain control of the game and rolled on to a 65-56 win.

Afterwards a disappointed Coach Sagester said, “I thought we executed our defensive plan well in holding their two best offensive players down.” “If you would have told me that Steve Summers had 6 points and Wes Bassler 13 I would have liked our chances to win.” “Give them some credit they had guys step up with the young freshman Clint Spitler hitting some big three’s and JT Stone who I didn’t account for… he played like an animal in the post.”

“Offensively we had lots of good looks and guys who have been hitting shots missed, really the only player who showed up to play basketball was Derrick Chowning,” said Sagester

“Derrick played his tail off tonight, he had a career night with 21 points and 19 rebounds I can’t say enough about his effort,” added Coach Sagester.

Tri-Village is back in action tomorrow night traveling up to the fort to take on the Indians of Fort Recovery who downed Versailles 58-55.

We are going to have to come prepared to play against a very tough team from the “MAC” conference and try to get back to our winning ways were coach Sagester’s final comments.

The Patriots are now 2-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
