Ansonia, Ohio January 11, 2008
Tri-Village traveled to the jungle to take on the Tigers of Ansonia. The Patriots were looking to stay in the race for a CCC Crown and the Tigers were looking to play the role of spoilers.
Early on it was apparent it would be a defensive battle. The Tigers employed a match-up zone while trying to take away the Patriots inside game. On the Patriots first two possessions it looked like they would have their way inside with Barger and Buck both scoring in the post to take a 4-0 lead.
Niles Brown got the Tigers on the board with a trey at 5:18 to make if 4-3. Tri-Village used a little zone defense of their own and it was effective enough to hold the Tigers at bay for the remainder of the period. Buck and Stutz both scored inside and TV led 8-3 at the end of one.
Logan Brubaker opened the second period of play with a drive to the basket and the Patriots led 10-3. Ansonia struggling a bit offensively then hit back to back baskets in less then nine seconds, first two by Eric Beisner and then a three ball by Adam Kremer and Ansonia trailed by just two, 10-8.
Tri-Village then went back to their strength inside with Buck going for two baskets and Barger one fielder… an Eric Beisner trey was sandwiched in between and the half ended with the PATS leading 16-11.
To open the third quarter Niles Brown found the range from behind the arch and Ansonia found themselves still in the game now trailing 16-14.
The Patriots big man Ryan Buck went to work inside again for two straight baskets to stretch out the lead again for TV but Beisner gained consecutive trips to the free throw line to close it to 20-17.
Over the next two minutes of play Tyler Greer would take over the game scoring eight of his 13 points in the game. Greer was able to get out with the ball off the break getting the rim and drawing fouls on two straight possessions. He then hit a three-ball and followed that up with a 15’ pull up jumper off the break and with 1:28 to play the PATS led 28-17.
Ansonia was able to get a tip in from Kremer off a missed free throw to close the third period out trailing 28-19.
In the final stanza Tri-Village extended their lead 35-20 the largest of the evening. The Patriots then were content to slow it down pulling out the Tigers and winning it down the stretch from the free throw line taking a 43-33 league win.
Afterwards Coach Josh Sagester was pleased to get out Ansonia with a win. “It’s never easy playing here they have such good support and always play hard.”
“I was real pleased with our defense tonight it was a defensive win”, said Sagester. “They have two really good scorers in Beisner and Brown and for the most part we never let them get comfortable and when you don’t let either of them get 20 points it’s a good effort.”
“Our two post players really did the job tonight controlling the inside”, said Sagester. “They (Buck and Barger) controlled the boards (7 each) and worked well inside offensively. Our guards did a nice job defensively tonight as well and that stretch by Tyler Greer in the third period really opened up the floor for us”, added Sagester.
“This was a nice win but we have to get ready for another road game and league contest at Mississinawa Valley tomorrow”, concluded Sagester.
TV now stands at 9-3 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The JV boys also won to raise their record to 10-2 overall and 7-0 in conference play.
