David Barger scored 10 point but it was his defense on the Trojans big man that helped key the conference win over Arcanum

Arcanum, Ohio November 23, 2007

The Tri-Village Boys Basketball Team opened the 2007-08-basketball season under fire as they traveled to Arcanum to take on their cross-town rival. No matter the records this is always a hard fought game.

The Patriots struck first as they went inside to Ryan Buck at 7:10. Arcanum’s Clint Hale answered at 6:11 to tie it 2-2. TV then got a trey from Tyler Greer and two straight field goals from David Barger… but Braden Means sandwiched in a couple of goals to keep it close 9-6 at 3:08.

Buck gave the Pats their biggest lead thus far 11-6 at 2:35… but it wouldn’t hold, back to back three’s by Means and Hale gave the home team a 14-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Arcanum continued with their hot hand in the early going of the second quarter with 3 straight field goals from Hale, Means and freshman Austin Bruner to go up 20-13 their largest lead of night.

However Tri-Village worked back as Buck scored 5 points, two free throws by Barger and another two by Tyler Evans tied the score 22-22 with 1:31 to play.

A Greer free throw regained the lead for TV briefly… but Arcanum regained the lead 24-23 on a Seth Paulus fielder.

Kendall Stutz knocked down a three-pointer, followed by a Greer steal for two put TV up 28-24. Braden Means struck one more time hitting two of his game high 20 points with less than a second left in the half to draw Arcanum closer 28-26.

In the third period Tri-Village would build a lead of seven points twice. The first time on a Barger jumper at 4:13 to go up 37-30… but Arcanum pulled to within two on a Balsbaugh goal to make it 39-37. The second time came when freshman Drew Moore drained a three-pointer from 22’ to end the third quarter giving the Patriots a 44-37 lead.

In the final stanza Tri-village would expand their lead to double digits after a Heath West free throw but Arcanum wouldn’t go away quietly. After leading 55-44 with 2:05 to play Arcanum was able to whittle it down to 57-54 with one minute to play.

Tri-Village kept their composure and closed it out from the free throw line to take home a season opening win and more importantly a conference victory 60-54.

Tri-Village was able to get to the free throw line 29 times making 21 on the night.

“This was a good win, said Coach Josh Sagester. We got a great team effort tonight. Our post players gave us a great game tonight. “We were able to pound the ball in and take advantage of our experience in the post. Ryan Buck gets us 20 points. David Barger did an outstanding job in defending the Balsbaugh kid. We challenged him and he stepped up and got the job done while adding 10 points. Tyler Evans comes off the bench and hits two big free throws and gets a block.”

“We also got real nice contributions from Tyler Greer both offensively with 14 points and defensively. Logan Brubaker gave us a good floor game but was saddled by fouls and Drew Moore stepped in to hit a big three point shot for us. We will need this kind of effort from all our kids each night to be successful”, concluded Sagester.

Tri-Village will be back in action tomorrow at National Trail in a boys and girls double header.
