The Tri-Village Patriots took care of business tonight in hosting the Newton Indians to stay in contention for a conference title.
“We wanted to set the tone early with our guys on the defensive end and it paid off,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “Our kids really got after with good on the ball defense and total team defense.
“We were able to shut down their leading scorer (Powell) and conference leading scorer (19 ppg) game and held him in check with just 4 points on the night,” added Sagester.
Tri-Village was able to take a first quarter advantage of 11-8 with their inside game. Ryan Buck and David Barger combined for 8 points and freshman Drew Moore nailed a three-pointer to close the period.
In the second stanza TV erupted for 18 points to open up a double-digit lead at 29-18. Kendall Stutz got the hot hand from the outside while Tyler Evans found success on the inside for an 11-point halftime lead.
In the third period Tri-Village continued to play solid man-to-man defense to shut down Newton and widened their lead to 14 points 40-26. As the period was about to end senior point guard Logan Brubaker took an elbow to the mouth and had to leave the game.
“The game was really starting to get physical and with our solid team defense I really didn’t want to risk anyone else getting hurt,” commented coach Sagester after the game. “I wanted to make sure we were healthy for tomorrow night in a game that could very well decide the conference champion.”
The Patriots then basically played with their second unit the rest of the way controlling the game on their way to a 63-41 league win.
“This was a good win and it was nice to see contributions from all our kids tonight, now we need to repeat our defensive performance tomorrow night at Miami East,” concluded Sagester.
Eight of nine Tri-Village players scored in the game. Ryan Buck led the way pulling down 8 offensive rebounds while dropping in 13 points. Kendall Stutz and Drew Moore both chipped in 11 in support. David Barger pulled down 7 defensive rebounds and Tyler Evans dished out 3 assists on the night.
The win improves the Patriots overall mark to 13-3 and 8-1 in conference play.
The Junior Varsity Boys remain undefeated in league play at 9-0 and 14-2 overall. Brett Dill led the way on the night with 20 points including 6 three-pointers.
The Patriots are back in action tomorrow night traveling to Miami East to take on the Vikings.
