The Tri-Village Patriots Boys Basketball Team can now lay claim to back-to-back Sectional Titles with a dramatic last second shot by Ryan Buck giving TV a 50-48 win over the Yellow Springs Bulldogs. The Boys Team now joins the Girls Team in playing for a district title.
Springs jumped out to a 3-0 lead until David Barger hit a baseline jumper to get the PATS on the board at 6:01. Logan Brubaker nailed a three-pointer to tie the game at 7-7 and 30 seconds later Tyler Greer hit one from the corner to give the Patriots their first lead 10-7 at 3:08. The Patriots went up by 5 when Ryan Buck hit a short corner jumper off an assist from Barger and TV led 12-7. Yellow Springs however closed the period strong with two straight fielders trailing just 12-11.
Another Barger baseline jumper followed by Kendall Stutz on a drive for two extended the PATS lead back to 5 again 16-11 with four minutes to play in the second quarter. Yellow Springs then turned up the heat with full court pressure to slow the Patriots down. They were successful in forcing a few turnovers… but Tri-Village was able to get stops with some good half-court defense of their own. The Bulldogs made a three-pointer with two-minutes to play to make it 16-14. Stutz netted two free throws before Springs hit a buzzer beater to end the half with TV leading 18-16.
In the third both teams started to get into a flow offensively. For Tri-Village Ryan Buck was able to assert his presence inside going for 8 points and Tyler Greer was successful in beating the press down the floor for two easy scores yet the Patriots trailed at the 1:18 mark by four points 32-28. Jeremiah Peacock was doing most of the damage for Yellow Springs. Tri-Village closed out the frame strong when Stutz dropped in a free throw, then his second one rimmed out but Ryan Buck was able to tip it in and TV was within one 32-31. Buck followed that with two free throws to regain the lead for TV 33-32 to end the third period.
The final stanza was like the rest of the game with several lead changes and a few ties in between. Yellow Springs took their largest lead of the night 42-36 at 5:04 when Raphael Allen made a lay-up off the break and Tri-Village needed a timeout to regroup.
Tri-Village responded by going on a 10-0 run first a Stutz drive for two, followed by a Greer drive for reverse lay-up. Buck struck for two inside at 3:34 and added two free throws at 3:20 and when Tyler Greer dropped in two free throws at 2:43 the Patriots held a 46-42 lead and had Yellow Springs right where they wanted them.
A stubborn Yellow Springs teams though didn’t fold as Peacock stepped forward one more time netting 11 of his game high 20 points in the fourth quarter. Peacock scored six straight points to tie the game with just 1:35 to play.
Following a TV turnover Yellow Springs elected to hold the ball spreading out the floor waiting for the last shot. They would run the clock down and with just 13 seconds to play drove the lane but pushed off on Logan Brubaker who drew the charge giving the ball back to Tri-Village.
The Bulldogs once again used their full court press, however TV threw it over the top to an Stutz on the left wing. Stutz caught the ball with 6 seconds left and drove to the hole putting up a shot that rimmed in and out setting up the last second heroics for Ryan Buck. Buck grabbed the errant shot put it back up, it rattled in out and then as the buzzer sounded fell back through the basket to send the Patriots back to the District Title game for the second year in a row with a 50-48 win over Yellow Springs.
Afterwards Coach Josh Sagester commented, “I’m not sure we played our best game tonight, give Yellow Springs some credit though, their athleticism gave us problems.” “It was quite an ending, there wasn’t anything we could do accept get a defensive stop at the end.” “We got the charge call by Logan Brubaker and then the play by Ryan Buck at the other end, wow!” “This is great for our kids, our team, our program they have all worked so hard and I’m so proud of all of them that they will get to play again at UD Arena for a chance at a District Title,” concluded Sagester.
