The Ansonia Tigers stormed the Battleground in the opening quarter as they raced out to a 17-6 advantage. Drew Moore was able to score right before the buzzer to end the quarter down 17-8.
Ansonia had the hot-hand early on and was able to knock down a couple of outside shots including three-pointers by Kyle Young and Reese Walters along with 7 points by Dylan Bubeck and the Tigers had the Patriots on their heels.
Tri-Village then clamped down on the Tigers with a better defensive effort in the second frame and slowly worked back into the contest. Two straight field goals by Tyler Greer got them started before Ansonia was able to get a bucket from Young to maintain their lead of 19-11.
But the defense would hold the Tigers to just 2 second quarter points, while the Patriots got baskets by Matt Miller, Moore and Greer to pull within two, down 19-17 at the half.
In the third period neither team was able to separate as they battled with 2 ties and 5 lead changes the final change came on a Brett Foreman baseline jumper to give TV a 27-26 lead.
Foreman opened the final stanza with a three-pointer to get the Patriots off and running. Slowly the Patriots were able to widen the gap as Greer and Moore took over, Greer with two drives to the basket and Moore with a three-pointer and two drives to the hole and the Patriots held a 42-33 lead with 2:06 to play.
The Patriots then put the game into the hands of their guards taking time off the clock forcing Ansonia to send them to the free throw line and the Patriots would then secure the win by a score of 47-36.
“We knew it wouldn’t be an easy game with Ansonia tonight,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “Ansonia is a tough team to play, Coach Kremer does a nice job getting his kids to execute his zone defense and it helps when they have a 6’8” kid in the post and they make it awfully difficult for you to score inside keeping things on the perimeter.”
“I thought we did a nice job of defending Adam Kremer tonight, Matt Miller worked hard to take him away and we doubled him hard when he got the ball.”
“Probably the biggest key to the game was the play of Brett Foreman. Brett gave us a good game tonight, he scored 11 points and it was the difference. Here is a kid who hasn’t played much this year but he didn’t pout and stayed positive, we told him all week long that he was going to be a key player against the zone of Ansonia and he made the most of the opportunity and I couldn’t be happier for him,” added Sagester.
“I’m very happy to be 7-3 at this point in the season, not many people probably expected us to still be undefeated in the conference. This makes the game next Friday against the only other undefeated team, Miami East in the Cross County Conference a pivotal game,” concluded Sagester.
Tri-Village placed three players in double figures with Drew Moore leading the way with 18, Tyler Greer added 13, and Brett Foreman chipped in 11 points. Greer led with 8 rebounds while Heath West handed out 5 assists.
Tri-Village goes to 7-3 on the year and 4-0 in conference play. They are back in action next Friday at the Battleground when Miami East will come calling.
In Junior Varsity action the Patriots captured a 45 26 victory. After getting off to slow start they blew the game open in the second half. Aaron Cassel led the way with15; Evan Barger added 10 points and 12 rebounds and Jeremy Doolin dished out 5 assists in the win. The win puts the JV record at 7-3 overall and 3-1 in conference play.
