Drew Moore takes one strong to the hole and contributed 11 points in the 54-50 league win over Covington.

Covington, Ohio

Tri-Village traveled to Covington, a place that hasn’t been kind to them on their last two visits resulting in close losses for Coach Sagester and the Patriots as they were still looking to get that first win in his tenure on the Buccs home-court.

As it turns out, the third time is a charm, as Tri-Village built up a couple of 10-point leads in the final period. They used it to their advantage to hold off a couple of Buccaneer runs… then finished them off at the free throw line to take a 54-50 win.

“We are glad to get the win,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “Anytime you go to Covington you know it’s not going to be easy. They have good athletes who play physical and Coach Roger Craft does a great job with his system in making you play his style of basketball.”

In the opening period Drew Moore and Tyler Greer both netted 6 points each. Moore hit consecutive three-pointers and Greer finished a drive with 19 seconds to play to give TV a 14 – 10 first period advantage.

If Tri-Village thought it was going to be easy the Buccs had something else in mind. Covington went toe to toe with the Patriots trading baskets in the second frame that saw 4 lead changes.

Covington gained their first lead at the 2:40 mark on a 15’ jumper by Eric Beckstedt to make it 19-18… but Cody Gunckel answered with a trey to regain the lead for TV 21-19.

Beckstedt then fired in his 3rd three-pointer of the half to regain the lead for Covington 23-22 only to see Tyler Greer get it back for the PATS at the free throw line as TV held a one-point lead at the half 24-23.

“I thought we played soft in that second period,” said Sagester. “Our defensive intensity wasn’t there, give Covington some credit they had some kids knock down some shots.” “We got a spark from Cody Gunckel who was able to come off the bench and contributed 7 points in the period that kept it close,” added Sagester.

In the third frame Tri-Village, mainly behind Tyler Greer and his 10 points, was able to build up a 40-32 lead. “Tyler took over and played like a man, much like he did in the TV South game,” said Sagester. “I also thought we played much better defensively.”

“We always seem to have a stretch in a game where we can’t hit shots - easy shots,” said Covington coach Roger Craft. “The third quarter tonight was that stretch for us. We just can’t have inconsistent play and expect to win against good teams like Tri-Village.”

David Richards started off the final stanza with a stick back to give TV a 10-point lead their largest of the game. Each time it looked like the Patriots were about to put the game away the Buccs would answer with a small run of their own.

The game ebbed and flowed back and forth between a ten-point and 6-point lead. With 39 seconds to play Cody Gunckel dropped in two throws and TV led 53-43.

Game over? Not yet!

The Buccs still had life when Eric Beckstedt threw in a 25 footer that was followed by a couple of missed Patriot free throws. Tyler Greer was then able to put TV up 54-47 on a free throw… but Covington’s Josh Boehringer drained a 3 from the corner to narrow the lead 54-50.

With 4 seconds to play TV stepped over the end line giving Covington one last shot. The Buccs looking for a desperation three ball attempt while trying to draw a foul for a 4 point play didn’t happen and he Patriots secured the win 54-50.

“Tri-Village is a nice team,” Craft praised. “The Greer kid is good and the Moore kid is a darn good shooter as a sophomore. They don’t have the size they’ve had in the past, but Coach Sagester does a great job with what he has.”

“We were scrappy to get back into the game after being down by ten,” Craft explained. “The kids never stopped playing.”

“We just couldn’t put them away,” said Sagester. “For whatever reason we have been having problem closing out games. We miss a free throw, don’t get the loose ball or give up to many second and third chance opportunities, give Covington some credit they battled till the end,” concluded Sagester.

For the game Tri-Village shot 47% from the field, making 17 of 36, while Covington shot 39% from the floor on a 16 of 41 shooting night.
Tri-Village was 4 of 12 from behind the arc for 33% and 16 of 23 from the free throw line for 69%.

The rebounding totals were virtually even as Tri-Village pulled down 19 boards to 18 for Covington. The Buccs did hold an advantage in offensive rebounds, 11-7.

Both teams committed 12 turnovers on the evening.
The win raises Tri-Village record to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The loss drops Covington’s record to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in the CCC.

Tri-Village was led in scoring by Tyler Greer with 20 points and 5 assists with Drew Moore also adding 11 points to the cause.

The Junior Varsity dropped another close one in overtime to Covington 32-30 putting their record at 7-5 overall and 4-3 in conference play.
