It was “Senior Night” at the Battleground for the Tri-Village Patriots with the focus on members of the basketball team, cheerleading squad and pep band. It was a packed house for the home crowd as they hosted the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks looking to play the spoiler. It would not happen as the Patriots jumped out to a 19-8 first quarter lead and never looked back on their way to a 58-36 win to celebrate the night in style.
In the opening period the Patriots had 6 different players score; Heath West, Tyler Greer, Matt Miller, Brett Foreman, Drew Moore and Cody Gunckel.
The Patriots scored three consecutive three-pointers in the last 1:30, two of them old-fashioned three’s, the last capped by Drew Moore with no time on the clock and TV held a 19-8 first quarter lead.
Tyler Greer and Cody Gunckel set the pace in the 2nd period both netting 5 points in the period and Tri-Village had a 31-16 halftime advantage.
“I really liked our defensive effort in the first half,” commented Coach Josh Sagester.
In the third quarter Tri-Village would continue to showcase their man-to-man defense frustrating the Blackhawks, at the 2:20 mark a Dave Richards fielder gave TV their largest lead of the night 49-20. The period started with Heath West sinking a trey while drawing a foul and his charity toss capped a rare 4-point play. Drew Moore led the Patriots in the quarter with 7 points.
In the final stanza the Blackhawks showed some signs of life. Going back to the 2:20 mark of the previous period, the Hawks held the Patriots scoreless until Drew Moore sank a free throw at the 4:07 mark. Over the same time frame MV was able to score 10 straight points of their own and trailed 50-30.
Tri-Village was then able to regain their focus to maintain their twenty-point margin the rest of the way with senior Zach Mogle finishing the scoring with 2 free throws and TV earned a 58-36 win.
“This was a good way to send our seniors out, said a happy Coach Sagester. We have six seniors who have been a great group of kids. They have done everything I asked of them, no belly aching, no whining or crying just a hard working group that deserve the success they have achieved so far. “Who would have thought we would be 13-6 after we graduated 6 seniors last year with only one returning starter in Tyler Greer,” said Coach Sagester.
“This is the second year in row we put a thumping on the other team on senior night. Our first shot defense was really good tonight, we struggled a little with our defensive rebounding but overall the kids played a nice game to get a nice win,” concluded Sagester.
Five of the six seniors got in the scoring column tonight. Drew Moore paced the Patriots by scoring 16 points, dished out 5 assists and grabbed 5 steals. Tyler Greer scored 13 points while pulling down 7 caroms and Cody Gunckel added 11 points in the win. The Varsity record is now 13-6 overall and 9-2 in conference play. The regular season will conclude next Friday when the Patriots travel to Franklin Monroe.
The JV team after leading 23-15 at the half turned in a very poor 3rd quarter effort and fell short the Blackhawks. Evan Barger scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the cause. The JV record now stands at 10-9 on the season.
