The 2008-2009 Tri-Village Basketball Team would continue the tradition of winning with a 14-7 overall record and a 10-2 conference mark good enough for a second place finish in the league.
The Patriots started the year off with a bang at home against league rival Arcanum with a convincing win 66-44. At the time no one realized the significance of the win. It would be the only blemish Arcanum would have in league play.
The Patriots went on to win their first 6 league games including Arcanum, Bradford, TV South, Tri-County North, National Trail and Ansonia to remain undefeated in the conference.
Then after a slow start in a key match up with Miami East the Patriots would rally late… but came up short as Miami East hung the first conference loss on the PATS.
TV then dug out a close game at Covington to set up their next big conference showdown with Bethel. The Bees were a team many figured would win the conference… and much like the game at East, a slow start by Tri-Village left them on the short end and appeared to put them out of the race.
But a one point win by Arcanum over East a week later gave TV a glimmer of hope that they might still have a chance at a share of the title with a little help from other conference teams.
The Patriots finished the season strong with conference wins over Newton, Mississinawa Valley and Franklin Monroe.
Tri-Village got little help from fellow CCC Teams as Miami East and Arcanum both finished strong with 11-1 records to share the CCC Crown, which left the Patriots in 2nd place with a 10-2 record.
Tri-Village then entered sectional play as the 4th seed and a first round match-up with Yellow Springs. The Bulldogs were a team TV beat on a last second shot to win the Sectional Title in 2008.
Throughout the contest Tri-Village looked to be in complete control of the game and on their way to another win against the Bulldogs. Unfortunately things went wrong down the stretch and the Patriots saw their lead evaporate and they weren’t able to recover once Springs grabbed the lead. TV was sent home early without the opportunity to defend their back-to-back sectional championships.
Coach Josh Sagester summed up the season, “Our kids worked their butts off and I couldn’t be prouder of them. Back in November is you would have said we would be 14-6 in the regular season and 10-2 in the conference I would have taken it… many of the predictions were that we would be a middle of the pack program with just one returning starter… but our kids worked hard, believed in the program and deserved the success they got in the regular season. We would have loved to kept it going in the tournament… but it wasn’t meant to be.”
Tri-Village will graduate 6 seniors; a 4 year varsity player in Tyler Greer, Heath West, Brett Foreman, David Richards, Troy Pearson and Zach Mogle.
Rounding out the team were juniors Cody Gunckel, Matt Miller, Craig Dill and sophomore Drew Moore.
Drew Moore led the team in scoring at 16.3 points a game.
Tyler Greer was the only other double-digit scorer at 13.8 points a game. He also led two other categories in rebounding at 4.8 a contest as well as dishing out 5.2 assists a game.
Heath West was second in assist at 3.5 a game.
Four other players would be close behind in the rebounding category with Matt Miller pulling down 4.6 a game, while Troy Pearson and Dave Richards both averaged 4.1 a game.
