St. Henry entered the game undefeated 8-0 with a high-powered offense and size in the post that Tri-Village could not match. The Patriots employed a game plan to try and utilize their strength at the guard position to pull out the Redskins to create lanes for scoring opportunities rather then try to shoot over the top of the bigger Redskins.
The style of play isn’t always a fan favorite… but those who appreciate good skill level and strategy can find enjoyment in such a style. Two years ago the style almost yielded a win on the home floor as the game went down to the wire with St. Henry winning 35-32.
In the opening quarter St. Henry opened up a 5-0 lead after hitting a three-pointer from the corner at 2:45. Tri-Village was able to finally get on the board on a Tyler Greer drive for two with 48 seconds to play and the quarter ended with St. Henry leading 5-2.
In the second period St. Henry opened up a 10 point lead on consecutive three-point shots 13-3. Tyler Greer was able to penetrate for one more basket in the period… but it was all St. Henry at the half 18-5. The Patriots had good looks but were unable to knock down any shots.
In the third frame Tyler Greer was able penetrate and dish handing out 4 assists with David Richards and Brett Foreman finishing. Richards scored 6 points in the frame and the PATS had narrowed the Redskin lead to 27-18.
In the final stanza the Patriots continued to attack the basket with Greer leading the charge working his way for 9 points to keep within striking distance.
A frustrated St. Henry team struggled offensively as they were never able to get into a flow. That frustration resulted in a 15-30 performance from the free throw line. Their shooting woes at the line gave Tri-Village opportunities… but the Patriots struggled themselves and were unable to knock down perimeter shots while also missing a number of shots within 3 feet of the basket.
Those missed opportunities proved to be enough for St. Henry to close out the game with a 43-32 win.
“I really felt we had a good chance to win this game,” said coach Josh Sagester. “They (St. Henry) are a very good basketball team and undefeated for a reason and we just couldn’t go toe to toe with them. I thought our kids executed and showed good patience but we missed too many easy lay-ups and just couldn’t knock down shots.”
“Tyler Greer performed well this weekend coming off the game at Covington and then tonight against St. Henry,” concluded Sagester.
Tri-Village now stands at 0-8 in games played against St. Henry including the 1991 State Championship game verses the Redskins.
The Patriots were led tonight by Tyler Greer with 17 points the loss drops Tri-Village to 8-5 overall. They are back in action next Friday as they travel to Bethel to take on the Bees with both teams recording just one conference loss.
In Junior Varsity action St. Henry pulled away late in the 4th quarter to win 44-38, their record falls to 7-6 overall.
