Tri-Village overcame a slow start for the 3rd game in a row after getting down 10-0 and was able to capture a two-point lead to end the 1st quarter. The Patriots was able to narrowly win the remaining 3 quarters, enough to capture a 56-49 win.
The Patriots were outscored 10-0 by the 5:07 mark of the first quarter in part to turnovers and bad defense. Ansonia took advantage for a couple of easy fast break lay-ups while also knocking down a couple of three-pointers.
“We need to do a better job to start the game,” said coach Josh Sagester. “I’m not sure why we aren’t ready to play but it’s going to catch up with us where we won’t be able to recover.”
The Patriots did recover by adjusting to the aggressive full court pressure of the Ansonia guards and was able to get into a half court offense finally getting some looks at the basket. That’s when Drew Moore took over the game scoring the next 10 points to tie the game at 3:12
Moore hit on two treys, a drive to the basket and a free throw for an old fashioned three and another free throw to get T-V back into the contest.
Cody Gunckel scored on a drive and T-V led 12-10 and kept the lead the rest of the game.
After getting off to such a fast start T-V shut out Ansonia the last five minutes of the first quarter. “We made a defensive adjustment switching to a man-to-man and that really seemed to help us,” said Sagester.
Both teams traded baskets over the first three minutes of the second period until senior Craig Dill hit a trifecta from the top of the key and T-V held a six-point lead 19-13. The rest of the quarter was again a trade of baskets with Tri-Village holding a 27-23 lead at intermission.
In the third frame the Patriots would open up a nine-point lead 38-29 on a Matt Miller stick-back with four minutes to play. Ansonia would continue to battle closing out the frame trailing 42-36.
In the final stanza Tri-Village attacked the middle of the extended 2-3 zone of the Tigers working the ball down on the block to Tyler Garland for a couple of baskets.
The Patriots continued to exploit the middle with drives to the basket by Moore and Gunckel. T-V would take a 12-point lead with 2:17 to go on a Miller free throw.
Despite two three point shots by the Tigers in the last couple of minutes Tri-Village was able to secure the win at the free throw line with Gunckel and Moore both going two-for-two down the stretch for the 56-49 win
“We got the win tonight and anytime you can go on the road and win in our conference it’s a good thing.” “This is a tough place to play and we overcame a slow start and a tough minded team, they (Ansonia) are good athletes. I thought we adjusted and gutted it out… but we have things to work on and need to make better decisions at crucial times during the game.”
For the game Drew Moore led the way with 24 points, Cody Gunckel added 15 while pulling down 6 rebounds. Matt Miller bounded 7 caroms and had 3 blocks with Evan Barger grabbing 5 boards in support.
Tri-Village goes to 11-5 on the season and 8-1 in the conference and remains tied with Bethel and Frankin Monroe each with one loss as well. Tri-Village will host the Dixie Greyhounds in non-conference action on Saturday night.
In junior varsity action the Patriots pulled away in the second half for an easy 41-23 conference win. Aaron Cassel dropped in 15 points with Haedon Schlechty close behind scoring 13 points. Their record is now 11-5 overall and 7-2 in the conference.
