Whenever Tri-Village and Arcanum meet on the hardwood no matter the record or talent you know it’s going to be a good ball game and rarely has anyone been disappointed. Friday night was no different, the outcome was in doubt almost entirely till the end… but a few key plays down the stretch along with timely free throw shooting enabled Tri-Village to escape Arcanum with a 69-58 league win.
Arcanum got a quick jump out of the gate opening up a 10-0 lead as Ryan Burns hit a trey and fielder to start the game. A jumper by Derrick Baker and a three-pointer by Mitchell Brown prompted a timeout by the Patriots at 4:38.
Drew Moore was able to connect on a triple after the timeout to get the PATS on the board. The Patriots would hold the Trojans scoreless the rest of the quarter and got help from Matt Miller with a free throw and a basket to get the score to 10-6.
In the second period neither team was able to pull away from the other… but a Drew Moore lay-up with 40 seconds to go gave TV their first lead of the game 25-24. Baker would regain the lead on two free throws for Arcanum taking the lead back 26-25 at the half. Cody Gunckel had the hot hand to lead TV in the period with 8 points.
In the third quarter an Evan Catron three-pointer gave TV a 30-28 advantage… but neither team was able to take control of the game as it see sawed back and forth with TV holding a 43-40 lead to end the third quarter. Gunckel continued his hot shooting with 13 points.
In the final period Arcanum was able to go up 51-47 on some good shooting again from Burns, Baker and Brown. With 3:58 left to play after Arcanum had put the clamps on Gunckel and Moore from the outside TV found some success inside with Matt Miller and Colby Morris. On two straight possessions, Evan Catron hit Morris at the free throw line with a pass and he confidently knocked down the shots to tie the game 51-51. Moments later Miller would follow it up with an old fashioned three point play inside and TV held a 54-51 lead with 2:51 to go.
After 1-of-2 free throws by Baker, Cody Gunckel weaved inside for two drawing the foul and TV went up 57-52 with 1:42 to play. Austin Bruner quickly drove the floor for a deuce to make it 57-54 and then things went awry for Arcanum.
Drew Moore driving the ball was fouled putting him on the line for a one and bonus… but the Trojans also were called for a technical foul at the same time for voicing displeasure over the call. The result was four straight free throws by Moore and the ball back. Another foul by Arcanum sent Moore back to the line for two more free throws and TV led 63-54 in just a matter of seconds.
From there Tri-Village was able to finish the game out at the line with Moore hitting 4 more free throws (a total of 10 in row) on their way to a 69-58 win.
This was a heck of battle said Coach Sagester after the game. “You know going in no matter the records it’s going to be a good game. This was a rivalry long before I got here and will be a rivalry long after I’m gone. These kids don’t want to lose this game. I thought they (Arcanum) competed hard and to their credit they came out and made shots. They go up 10-0 on us and they made us play their game and we couldn’t wrestle control so that we could get into our man-to-man offense. But we battled and we are having kids step forward some doing things they haven’t been asked to do before. We know Cody and Drew can score… but what a game we got from Miller, he snared 18 rebounds and had 12 points as well. We also got key baskets from Colby Morris down the stretch when they were taking some things away from us,” concluded Sagester.
Cody Gunckel led the Patriots with 24 points; Drew Moore added 17 and Miller chipped in 12 on the night. Tri-Village goes to 3-0 on the year, 2-0 in conference.
The Patriots junior varsity also won and has an identical record as the varsity.
Both teams are back in action tomorrow night for their first home game hosting Fort Recovery.
