After a lackluster performance last night the Tri-Village Patriots was looking to rebound taking on Arcanum for the 2nd time within a few weeks in the consolation game of the Jet Holiday Tournament. In the early going Tri-Village appeared to have worked out some of their defensive lapses and was scoring the basketball taking a 32-26 halftime lead. The Patriots lead held up through the third period 47-41 going into the final stanza… but then poor defense and quick shots on offense opened the door for Arcanum and they took advantage for a 62-56 win.
TV jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a three-pointer by Drew Moore and a drive to the basket for two by Cody Gunckel. Arcanum settled in and tied the game with Ryan Burns hitting a trey and Derrick Baker a deuce to tie it. Tri-Village would hit 4 more treys to extend their lead to 17-13 to end the period.
In the second quarter Arcanum would battle back and take a 20-18 lead at 5:56 on two consecutive baskets inside by Dylan White. But Tri-Village would get some more baskets from long range hitting three more triples before the end of the half to take a 32-26 lead. In the half Tri-Village would connect on 8 treys.
The Patriots started the second half by going inside to Matt Miller who would make an old-fashioned three-point play and TV led 35-26. The Patriots continued to score from the outside with Moore hitting on two more three pointers the second at 2:45 to go up 45-34 their largest lead of the game. Burns from Arcanum was also heating up and his outside shooting would rally the Trojans to 47-41 at the end of the third quarter.
Ryan Burns continued to lead the Trojans as he scored 9 straight points and at 4:33 Arcanum took at 50-48 lead erasing the 11-point margin TV worked so hard to get. The Patriots then began to settle for quick shots without working the ball in their offense and the Trojans gradually started to increase their lead. The Patriots found themselves on the other end of how they normally finish games having to foul Arcanum. The Trojans took advantage and converted at the free throw line to win the consolation game 62-56.
It was a disappointing Tournament for the Patriots who going in was considered to have a legitimate shot of taking the title… but only to finish last. A combination of poor defense, mental and physical toughness and poor decisions down the stretch would take its toll on the Patriots. They will need to fix it quickly heading into the meat of their league schedule over the next few weeks of January. They start out traveling to Miami East on Friday January 8th then host Covington the following Friday January 15th, travel to St. Henry Saturday January 16th, and then the following Friday January 22nd host the Bethel Bees. These next 4 games will test this team… hopefully they will have learned from the last two games and be ready for this difficult stretch.
Tri-Village was led in scoring by Drew Moore with (7) three-pointers and 28 points on the night. Matt Miller added 12 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Cody Gunckel contributed with 10 points.
The Tri-Village varsity record now stands at 7-3 overall while remaining undefeated in the conference at 5-0.
The Junior Varsity came up short against Versailles in the championship game and their record now stands at 8-2 overall and 4-1 in the conference.
