Troy, Ohio - March 3, 2010
The Arcanum Trojans after taking a first round bye opened sectional tournament play taking on the Tri-Village Patriots, first round winners over National Trail by the score of 51-40.
Both teams opened up in their own versions of a “triangle and two” defense with Arcanum trying to shut down Drew Moore and Cody Gunckel, Tri-Village focused on Ryan Burns and Austin Bruner, thus the chess match began.
Arcanum struck first on a Grady Garno three-ball that banked in from the top of the key. It would turn out to be a very competitive 8 minutes of play. Tyler Garland led Tri-Village with 4-points while Derrick Baker scored 5-points for Arcanum to give the Trojans a 13-11 lead after one period of play.
With both teams locked in their junk defense a chink in the armor started to avail itself to the Patriots. Matt Miller found room to work in the paint scoring 8-points, while Drew Moore hit two treys for 6-points and Cody Gunckel added 5-points to give Tri-Village a 30-18 lead with just 1:30 left to play in the second quarter.
Arcanum didn’t fold and held TV scoreless the rest of the way forcing some turnovers that led to 6 unanswered points to close the gap to 30-24 at the half. Ryan Burns led the charge with 6 points in the last couple of minutes.
Arcanum carried that momentum with them after intermission and tied the game at 32 when Austin Bruner found Baker all alone on the backside for an easy deuce.
“We made some adjustments at the half, said Coach Gunter to try and take advantage of the inverted triangle defense they were playing and got some easy baskets.”
“Matt Miller was really hurting us in the first half and we have to respect their perimeter shooters so we adjusted on defense after the half as well,” added Gunter.
Arcanum did that by extending their zone and moving Austin Bruner up in the defense taking away the middle and held Tri-Village to just 7 points in the third frame.
Arcanum continued to ride the hot-hand of Burns as he scored 7 points and Cody Schellhaas gave Arcanum some good play off the bench scoring a deuce to end the third period scoring to give Arcanum the lead 40-37.
In the final stanza Tri-Village hit back-to-back three-pointers by Gunckel and Moore tying the game 43-43 at the 6:31 mark.
Schellhaas again struck for Arcanum with an offensive put-back that was followed by two Burns free throws to go up 47-43.
Then things started to unravel for Tri-Village…Grady Garno made a steal at half court and Drew Moore reached pulling on Garno that drew an intentional foul call. That was followed by a technical foul on the bench and the Trojans took advantage expanding their lead to 51-43 at the 4:30 mark.
Tri-Village would then try and play catch-up the rest of the way…but Arcanum finished them off at the free throw line and went on to a 62-50 win.
Arcanum went to the line 34 times making 24 while the Patriots got to the line just 6 times in the game.
“This was a good win for us and a good effort by our kids. The run at the end of the half and our start in the second half was huge…and we finished the game strong by knocking down our free throws,” concluded Gunter.
Ryan Burns led Arcanum with 21 points and Derrick Baker added 12 points. Austin Bruner was held scoreless from the field but finished with 9 points all from the free throw line.
Drew Moore scored 19 points to lead Tri-Village and two seniors playing their last games Matt Miller added 14 and Cody Gunckel contributed 13 points.
Tri-Village finishes their season with a 16-6 overall record and an 11-1 conference record and CCC Co-Conference Champs with Bethel.
