12/4/09 – Bradford, Ohio

The Tri-Village Boys Basketball team got the season rolling with a 65-35 win over Bradford. They raced out to a quick 15-2 first quarter lead with Drew Moore leading the way with 7 points and Cody Gunckel and Matt Miller both netting 4 points each.

In the second quarter Bradford went to a full court press while also playing much more aggressive. It was effective enough to throw off TV sparking a Railroader charge to get back in the game. In fact Bradford would win the quarter 16-10 to narrow the lead to 25-18 at the half.

In the third period TV was able to slow Bradford down by being a little more careful with the basketball while trying to play through the physical bumping and shoving that was rubbing off as basketball. The Patriots were able to expand their lead back to the first quarter advantage they enjoyed to start the game 41-27. Drew Moore continued his consistent scoring pouring in 9, along with Evan Catron finding his stroke for 7 points in the frame.

In the final stanza the game continued digressed into an all out assault by the Roaders onto the Patriots… and they would send them to the foul line numerous times. In fact TV shot 36 free throws on the night. However, the Patriots persevered and weathered the storm to take an opening night 65-35 win.

Drew Moore would drop in 30 points on the night with Matt Miller adding 13 and Evan Catron 11 in the win.

Gunckel and Miller both hauled in 8 boards on the night. Evan Barger registered 4 blocks and Evan Catron 5 assists to lead the way there.

“It was an ugly game, said Coach Sagester. It started out as a basketball game… but then it turned into something else. I’m not sure what it was I think after we got up 15-2 in the first quarter they (Bradford) couldn’t compete offensively and really started to get after it pressuring, pushing and shoving to try and disrupt us. It was effective in the 2nd quarter and it was too early in the game for the officials to call much of it. However that changed in the second half and they (officials) started calling the fouls and we made our free throws.”

Coach Sagester was pleased with Drew Moore’s performance… “he handled the basketball well under pressure and still was able to put up 30 points. Evan Catron also gave us a solid floor game both defensively and offensively. Matt Miller did a nice job inside. I really thought we got some good minutes from our role players. Tyler Garland, Colby Morris did a nice job and Evan Barger really played big in relief of Miller. Kyle Pipenger came in and did a nice job handling the ball and played solid on defense. This was a good game for some of our kids to get their feet wet,” concluded Sagester.

In Junior Varsity action TV was able to come from behind after trailing for 3 quarters grabbing the lead on a Haedon Schlechty three-pointer. The Patriots rode the hot hand of Aaron Cassel who had 19 points and critical free throw shooting down the stretch by Matt Werner who dropped in 10 points for the 35-30 win.

TV is back in action on Saturday in a boys and girls double feature. The JV girls start at 3pm followed by the JV boys, Varsity girls and Varsity boys.
