It was a showdown at the Battleground as the Covington Buccaneers came to town to face the Tri-Village Patriots. Neither team could afford a second league loss if they hoped to challenge for a title with two teams still undefeated in the conference.
The Buccs struck first to take a 2-0 lead (the only lead of the night) until Matt Miller scored the next 5 points on two inside baskets and a free throw to put TV up 5-2. The Patriots would get a trey by Evan Catron to end the quarter with a 10-7 lead.
Drew Moore found Evan Barger open underneath the basket for a deuce to start the second quarter. Cody Gunckel then worked his magic weaving inside the lane for 8 points as Tri-Village took a 10 point lead at the half 26-16.
The Patriots went cold in the third quarter shooting just 14% and scoring five points, which allowed Covington to cut the margin to 31-24. “We got complacent and started to settle for jump shots and stopped doing what we did in the second quarter,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “We have struggled a little over the last three games recognizing it.”
In the final stanza the Patriots went back to what was working for them in the first half taking advantage of their quickness and attacking the basket.
The end result was Tri-Village scoring 28 points in the paint compared to just 10 points in the paint for the bigger, stronger Covington team.
“I thought our zone defense caused them some problems tonight,” said Sagester. “They (Covington) never really attacked us inside and took a lot of outside shots which is a credit to our defense.”
Tri-Village controlled the final quarter despite not being able to stop Adam Craft. Craft took over in the final quarter scoring all 16 of his points… but it wasn’t enough as Tri-Village took the 49-42-conference win.
For the game Tri-Village shot 17-42 (40.5%) from the field and 12-21 (57.1%) from the free throw line. Covington shot 14-45 (31.1%) from the field and 9-11 (81.8%) from the free throw line. The Buccs held the advantage on the boards 26-22
“This was a big win for us tonight,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “We’ve struggled the last 3 games and to get a win tonight puts us in a position to still challenge for a title with undefeated Bethel coming in here next week.” “We got a solid performance tonight from Cody Gunckel. Matt Miller had been sick all week and I really felt Evan Barger came in tonight and did an excellent job on defense, he played big with some rebounds, blocks and scored 4 points, and it was big contribution from our sophomore.” I think we grew tonight as a team and I look for it to continue,” concluded Sagester.
Cody Gunckel led the Patriots on the night scoring 15 points and pulled down 6 rebounds while Matt Miller added 10 points on the night.
The win raised the Patriots record to 8-4 overall and 6-1 in the conference.
The Junior Varsity also came up with a big win 41-40 with Kyle Pipenger leading the way with 14 points in 2 quarters of action and Aaron Cassel added 10 points. The JV record is now 9-3 overall and 5-2 in the conference.
