T-V Inducted new members into the Athletic Hall-of-Fame.

New Madison, Ohio – January 23, 2010

It was a good weekend for the Tri-Village communities with the boys team coming off a big conference win over Bethel. The girls just completed a big conference win over Franklin Monroe earlier in the afternoon and Saturday night, new members were to be inducted into the Tri-Village Athletic Hall of Fame. The only thing that could spoil an almost perfect weekend would be a loss to a 2-11 Fairlawn Jets team.

The Jets came into the game with those intentions and would not concede victory, in fact they hung around and kept it close behind the hot hand of Dustin Oates who scored 26 points on the night… but in the end the Patriots made enough plays to hold them off to record a 58-54 non-conference win capping a good weekend for the Tri-Village faithful.

In the opening period T-V dumped the ball inside to Matt Miller who scored the first two baskets for the PATS. Fairlawn answered on couple of jumpers by Shelby Hoying and a three-pointer by Dustin Oates to go up 7-4. The two teams traded baskets and then Drew Moore finished the quarter scoring 5 points to give T-V an 11-9 lead.

Cody Gunckel experienced some trouble shooting in the first quarter but started to come alive scoring the next eight points for Tri-Village and they held a 19-18 lead at 3:55.

Matt Miller scored a free throw and a put-back to extend the Patriots lead to 22-18 with 2:36 to play. The Patriots finished the scoring off an Evan Barger stick-back for a 24-20 half-time lead.

At halftime new members were inducted into the Tri-Village Athletic Hall-of-Fame. They were Dave Drew, Class of 1979, Gary Deeter, Class of 1980, Kelley Hunt, Class of 1986 and longtime Tri-Village coach of 30 years Matt “Pappa” Renfro. New inductees will be updated in a later edition.

Following the halftime induction Tri-Village would put up 21 points in the third frame. Every time it looked like they would pull away, Dustin Oates would fire up a long-range bomb to keep his team close. Oates scored 15 of his team’s 18 points in the frame. The Patriots matched the number of treys by Fairlawn with five of their own, two each by Evan Catron and Cody Gunckel and one by Moore to give Tri-Village a 45-38 lead.

In the final stanza the Patriots just couldn’t quite put away the pesky Jets, each time they made a mistake Fairlawn capitalized by hitting a big three or getting a fast break to stay within a possession or two of the lead.

With Tri-Village holding a 53-48 lead at 2:35, Oates drained another three ball. Drew Moore countered with a deuce… once again Oates fired one in this time from about 23’ with 38 seconds to play and Fairlawn had the game within one 55-54.

Fairlawn forced to foul sent Moore to the line hitting both free throws. The Jets took one more shot to tie and missed and then fouled Colby Morris on the rebound. Morris the front end of the one and bonus with 12 seconds to play and it would be the final point of the game giving T-V the 58-54 win.

Tri-Village goes to 10-5 on the season and travels to Ansonia on Tuesday night in another key league contest.

In junior varsity action the Patriots struggled against the full court pressure of Fairlawn losing a 58-40 and their record now stands at 10-5 overall as well.
