December 28, 2009 – Pitsburg, Ohio
In the opening round of the Jet Holiday Tournament Versailles would take the early game by a score of 70-56 over Arcanum. The nightcap pitted Franklin Monroe against Tri-Village and the Jets soared on the night as they pulled off a 65-52 win over the Patriots. FM will play Versailles at 8pm tomorrow night marking the first time they have reached the finals since 2003. Tri-Village will face Arcanum in the consolation game at 6:30pm.
In the first few minutes of the game the Jets raced out to a 12-2 lead behind Nathan Feitshans and Kyle Detling mainly off of turnovers and poor execution by the Patriots.
Coach Sagester called a timeout to regroup. After the timeout the Patriots settled in and slowly started to execute their offense while playing a little better on the defensive end holding FM to just two points over the next six minutes. At the same time Drew Moore hit two treys and Matt Miller to inside fielders to pull TV within two points trailing 14-12 after one quarter of play.
In second period the Jets took off again quickly to jump ahead 22-14 and would maintain the 8-point lead throughout to go up 29-21 at the half. Franklin Monroe used a balanced attack getting scoring from inside and out from 5 different players.
In the third frame Tri-Village would heat it up getting a little more balance in their scoring with Miller going for 9 points, Moore hit on 6 points, Evan Catron hit a trey and Tyler Garland hit a fielder as the Patriots poured in 20 points. With the success they had inside and out they were able to tie the game at 40-40 with 1:10 to play but trailed at the end of the third frame 44-41.
In the final stanza the lack of defense by the Patriots would spell defeat. Nathan Feitshans took advantage of the breakdown by the defense driving the ball to the basket on 4 straight possessions that allowed FM to jump out again to a double-digit lead. Feitshans scored 12 of his 17 points in the final period to lead Franklin Monroe to 65-52 win.
This game was won on defense with one team playing it and Tri-Village not playing it and never seemed to be in the game. The Jets took advantage as most good teams will do and now will play in the championship game against Versailles. The Patriots will try to regroup to take on Arcanum a second time this year in the consolation game.
Tri-Village record falls to 7-2 overall with the loss.
In Junior Varsity action Tri-Village was able to handle Franklin Monroe and will play Versailles in the championship. Their record is now 8-1 overall with the win.
