Over the last 6 years of the Josh Sagester era of Tri-Village basketball there have been some good teams and players who have gone through the program. A few of the teams even went on to win sectional titles… but all of them came up short of earning a Cross County Conference Title.
In 2005-2006 the Patriots had a showdown with the Bethel in the last game of the season. A win would have given the PATS a share of the title with Covington. After a hard fought battle the Bees handed T-V a hard loss leaving them in second place and bitter memory on their own home floor.
In 2007-2008 the Patriots went 18-8 winning a sectional title and lost a heartbreaker in double overtime in the districts, yet they finished 3rd in the conference.
In 2008-2009 the Patriots went 10-2 in the conference… but still finished in second place.
The Patriots once again found themselves competing for a title down the stretch in what appeared to be déjà vu with the final home game to determine a share of the crown.
Tri-Village got off to a slow start and when Tyler Schrodi hit a three-pointer at 2:47 the Jets led by the score of 14-4. Drew Moore then stepped forward hitting a trey of his own and followed that up with a drive for two to cut the lead to 16-9. The Jets went on to claim an 18-11 first quarter lead.
In the second period TV fought back as Evan Catron hit a couple of free throws and a trey. Cody Gunckel also got in the act duplicating Catron’s efforts. A big stick-back by Colby Morris helped get the Patriots within two trailing 26-24. Moore then hit a running one-hander at 3:21 to bring TV all the way back tying the game at 26 each. TV went on to a 30-29 halftime lead.
During the halftime ceremony Tri-Village honored long time Coach Matt “Poppa” Renfro. Coach Renfro asked those who he coached in the past to stand and be recognized, it was impressive to see the number of lives he touched in his 33 years of coaching at Tri-Village. Thank You Coach Renfro for your years of service and congratulations on your induction to the Athletic Hall of Fame.
After the intermission Matt Miller got the Patriots going with an old-fashioned three-point play. Cody Gunckel scored four points and Drew Moore generated nine points in the third frame as TV opened up a 45-40 lead.
Kyle Detling opened the final stanza with two straight scores the second a triple to knot the score at 45 each that was then followed by a Tyler Schrodi fielder to give FM the lead 47-45.
Just when it looked like the momentum was about to shift, Drew Moore stepped forward again pulling up and hitting a big three to regain the lead for Tri-Village 48-47. With the lead TV took control by using the dribble drive to their advantage to open up the floor.
The Patriots got into the bonus and gradually started to build a lead from the charity stripe. Colby Morris hit a big one and bonus to put TV up 51-47 at 2:31. Evan Catron hit two free throws as well at 1:19 to give the Patriots a 54-47 lead.
In typical Franklin Monroe fashion they just wouldn’t go away… but on this night it didn’t matter as Tri-Village was just as gritty and just as determined keeping two steps ahead down the stretch.
With 9 seconds to play Drew Moore hit two free throws that gave the Patriots a 60-54 lead causing the large overflowing Tri-Village crowd to rise to their feet in anticipation of the final outcome.
A momentary stop in play with 2 seconds to go resulted in two free throws for Van Spitler… but it was too little to late and when TV threw a baseball pass up the floor that ended up in Evan Barger’s hands, those last two seconds to run off the clock seemed like an eternity. But when they had expired, so had the ghost of the past, as this year’s 2009-2010 Tri-Village Basketball Team did what the others had not over the last 6 years by earning no less than a share of the Cross County Conference title and this time a sweet memory on their own home floor.
“It wasn’t easy, they just don’t hand these things out to everybody,” (referring to the CCC Title) said coach Josh Sagester. “Franklin Monroe came in here and gave it all they had, they played loose with nothing to lose and when they made shots early on we knew it was going to be a battle.”
“But our kids worked their butts off, they knew what was at stake and they weren’t going to be denied. They wanted this win not only for this team…. but for those teams and players who helped build the program over the last 6 years. This title represents the school, our fans, the community, the band, the cheerleaders, the boosters and the parents… and after 6 years it’s great to have the title back at Tri-Village,” commented Sagester.
“This was a special night and a great way to celebrate “Senior Night” for our 4 seniors Craig Dill, Matt Miller, Evan Catron and Cody Gunckel one I’m sure they will remember,” added Sagester.
“It’s hard to single out just one player as all the guys played hard and contributed… but Drew Moore stepped up tonight especially at critical times in the game to lead this team and showed why he should be considered as the top “Player of the Year” in the conference,” concluded Sagester.
Moore led TV on the night with 27 points, Gunckel added 13 points and Matt Miller pulled down 12 boards and Evan Catron dished out 5 assists.
Tri-Village ends their regular season at 15-5 overall and an 11-1 conference record. The outcome of the Bethel at Franklin Monroe game on Tuesday night will determine if the Patriots our co-champs with Bethel or outright champions.
Tri-Village now moves on to play National Trail in the sectionals on Saturday 2/27/10 at Troy High School playing a 5pm.
The Junior Varsity Boys concluded a fine season at 14-6 overall and a 10-2 record in the conference.
