The Tri-Village Boys Basketball team dominated the Fort Recovery Indians for 30 minutes… but in the final 2 minutes of the game a few unfavorable calls, a few missed free throws and a few missed rebounds all allowed the Indians an opportunity to steal victory from the jaws of defeat. A tip in with just 3 seconds to play gave the Fort a 72-70 win over the Patriots.
Fort Recovery featured a four-year player and future Findlay collegiate player Greg Kahlig. In the first half Tri-Village was able to keep him somewhat in check holding him to just 9 points, primarily due to an outstanding defensive effort from Tyler Garland.
In doing so the PATS was able to gain a 13-11 first quarter lead and then extend it to 35-27 at the half. Drew Moore led the way in the half with 15 points with Evan Catron knocking down three triples for 9 points.
In the third quarter things started to heat up including the Indians as they closed the gap to 43-40 with 2:20 to go. Drew Moore hit two-straight treys in 20 seconds that would help the Patriots regain some momentum 49-40 at the 2:00 minute mark. The Fort managed to creep back in drawing to 53-49 to close the quarter. Cody Gunckel heated up for TV going for 8 points with Moore matching it.
In the final stanza Tri-Village led again by Gunckel and Moore was able to extend their lead back to 65-55 with 3:00 to play and the Patriots had Ft. Recovery right where they wanted them or so they thought.
TV was starting to feel the effects of losing personnel due to foul problems. First it was Matt Miller at the end the third quarter… then it was Evan Catron, Colby Morris and eventually back-up center Evan Barger all in the final stanza. With the Patriots lacking size in the post Fort Recovery was aggressive in taking the ball to the basket usually coming away with points whittling away at the lead.
For most of the period the Indians were content fouling Drew Moore, all he did in the game was reel off 16 consecutive free throws in a row (including 10 from the previous night) for a total of 26 in a row… but his streak would come to an end down the stretch with the Patriots leading 70-68.
With 1:05 to play the Fort got a stick-back inside to tie it 70-70. Tri-Village then tried to hold the ball for a last shot… but a 5 second count with 19 seconds gave the ball back to Fort Recovery giving them the last shot attempt. They came up short on a 5-footer… but Fiely was able to tap in the rebound with 3 seconds to play to go up 72-70.
TV was unable to get an official to give them a timeout and a desperation heave from three quarter court was short and Fort Recovery stole a win spoiling the Patriots home opener.
After the game a bewildered Coach Sagester tried to collect himself, yet still feeling the sting from the loss summed up the game as best he could. “We dominated the game tonight, our kids worked hard, I can’t fault their effort they did what we asked this was a game we should have won. It’s hard for me to let this one go, we did everything right for 30 minutes. But we didn’t finish the game, we made some mistakes in the final minutes, a few 5 second calls (questionable), 5 missed free throws and a few missed defensive rebounds led to easy scores and allowed them (Fort Recovery) to get back in the game and eventually win it,’ concluded Sagester.
Drew Moore led Tri-Village tonight with 36 points, Cody Gunckel dropped in 16 points and Evan Catron hit three triples for 9 points.
Tri-Village suffers its first loss of the season dropping to 3-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
In Junior Varsity action Tri-Village won a close one 48-44 to remain undefeated at 4-0. Aaron Cassel again paved the way with 25 points.
Both teams are back in action hosting Twin Valley South Tuesday night.
