Drew Moore connected on 4 treys but also was able to get to the hole on his way to 22 points in win over Greenville.

December 19, 2009 – New Madison, Ohio

The Greenville Green Wave came into the battleground fired up and on fire as they raced out to a quick 19-8 first quarter lead. The Tri-Village Patriots however, maintained their composure closing to within one at the half and then took over in the second half for a decisive 59-44 win over neighboring Greenville.

In the opening quarter it was all Greenville coming out red-hot scoring 19 points as five players got on the scoreboard. Graham Luce went for 7 points while Tyler Holzapel, Cale Adkins, Zac Guillozet and Onez all registered points in the quarter.

Tri-Village struggled to score with Greenville applying a triangle two (the third straight game) defense to start the game. Evan Catron stepped forward with a few timely shots to keep the Patriots from getting blown out as TV trailed 19-8.

In the second period the Patriots began to adjust to a more aggressive style game. Cody Gunckel, Drew Moore and Matt Miller began to assert themselves into the game. Miller was doing a great job on defense and rebounding while Moore and Gunckel started heating it up from the outside. Moore dropped 8, Gunckel 6 and Miller 4 points… but Greenville’s Graham Luce scored 7 more to try and will the Wave as they took a 31-30 halftime lead.

After intermission TV came out into a match-up zone that would ultimately decide the game in favor of the home team. The Patriots held Greenville to 5 points in the third period and just 8 points in the final frame.

With Greenville unable to generate any offense against the zone… Cody Gunckel and Drew Moore made sure to take advantage as the duo would combine for 44 points to equal the entire Greenville effort on the night. Graham Luce did what he could do for the Wave with 22 points equaling the mark of Moore and Gunckel for game high honors.

Tri-Village would score 14 points to go on to a 44-36 third quarter lead and then put up 15 points in the final stanza for a 59-44 Patriot win.

What started out as fireworks by Greenville ended with a boom from Tri-Village and Cody Gunckel. Gunckel stole the ball at half court, raced to the other end throwing it down to finish the game with an exclamation point!

Coach Sagester appeared to be all smiles after the game. “What a fun game this was tonight,” said Sagester. “Our team got off to a slow start, in part to Greenville having the hot hand early on and their triangle and two defense. I was a little surprised to see them playing that against us, this is third straight game we’ve seen it. But to our kids credit they weathered the opening storm and just played basketball.

Evan Catron hit some big shots early on to keep us in it. We got great boarding, blocked shots and defense from Miller in the post, and Drew Moore played a nice game as well. This had to be extra special for Cody Gunckel tonight as he rose to the occasion and finished it well, I’m not sure I have ever seen him jump that high (referring to Cody’s dunk) and I was glad to see it.

I’m just happy to be 6-1, it would be nice to get a win Tuesday night go to 7-1 and then have a nice Jet Holiday tournament it would be a great Christmas gift,” concluded Sagester.

The win puts Tri-Village at 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

In junior varsity action Tri-Village also had a big second half effort leaving Greenville behind and unable to catch up. Aaron Cassel scored 20 with Kyle Pipenger adding 15 points in the 58-33 win. The Tri-Village junior varsity improves to 6-1 overall.
