| Cody Gunckel glides in for two of his 28 points in the loss to Miami East. |

January 8, 2010 Casstown, Ohio
The Tri-Village Patriots got off to a slow start and played from behind the entire game struggling against a solid defensive effort by Miami East. The Vikings came in to the contest leading the league in defense allowing just 45 points a game.
East showed patience and made good decisions with the basketball that led to easy scores or resulted in getting fouled. The Vikings went to the free throw line 34 times in the game. They would convert 23 while the Patriots got the line just 11 times making 6 throws which resulted in a 67-57 league win for Miami East.
Miami East opened in their typical zone defense and TV was able to break it down early on taking a 5-4 lead on a Matt Miller inside goal and a Cody Gunckel trey. The Vikings however were able to get production from their post player Evan Wolf who scored seven points and East would hold a 13-7 first quarter lead.
Miami East had a breakout second period as they raced out to a 22-9 advantage before TV called a timeout to regroup. The Patriots kept pace the rest of the period but was unable to generate much offense. East Tyler Dunivan began to assert his presence inside and was able to score 8 points to give the Vikings a 31-17 halftime lead.
In the entire second half Miami East would employ a box and one defense to keep Drew Moore in check. This allowed Cody Gunckel and other Patriots the opportunity to get some good looks at the basket. Gunckel would go on to score 20 of his 28 points in the second half.
The Patriots broke loose for 19 points in the third frame but really was unable to get any stops on the defensive end of the floor.
In the final stanza TV would put up 21 points… but East continued to execute showing patience eventually forcing the Patriots to foul and East would go on to a 67-57 league win.
The formula Tri-Village used early on has reversed in the last three games/losses with the opposition getting to the free throw line 3 times as much.
It won’t get any easier as a very physical Covington Buccaneers team comes town next Friday. Each team has just one league loss making this a pivotal game for both teams if they want to continue to stay in the hunt for a league title.
The Patriot’s loss drops their record to 7-4 overall and 5-1 in the Cross County Conference.
In the Junior Varsity contest the Patriots lost a tough game as well down the stretch falling 41-39. Their record now stands at 8-3 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
