Union City, Ohio February 12, 2010
Tri-Village found themselves in a situation as many teams, trying to shake off the rust from sitting two weeks without a live game and limited practice time. Meanwhile, Mississinawa was able to get in a contest during that time against local rival Ansonia in a fierce one-point game.
Despite the layoff TV was able to take an early lead 13-8 to end the first quarter with a balanced attack with Tyler Garland and Matt Miller both scoring 4 points, Drew Moore hit a trey and Cody Gunckel a fielder.
Evan Barger scored off a nice wrap-around pass from Colby Morris to start the second period to give Tri-Village a 15-8 lead. The Hawks then scored 5 straight to close to within two points 15-13.
The Patriots struggled a bit offensively for the next three minutes… but got a lift from Evan Catron who scored an old-fashioned three-point play to go up 19-15 with 2:32 to play.
Tri-Village held the Hawks scoreless for nearly five minutes until they scored a goal… but the Patriots finished the half with a flurry. Over the last minute Catron, Gunckel, Moore and Barger all scored to give TV a 27-17 halftime advantage.
After intermission Gary Peace opened up with a trey for the Hawks, which appeared to be their game strategy (6-for-33) firing them up from behind the arch. T-V on the other hand worked the ball inside game and Matt Miller scored 6 points to lead the Patriots to a 38-29 lead ending the third frame.
In the final stanza the Hawks made an early run closing the gap to 38-33… but behind the combo of Moore and Miller, TV was able to maintain a comfortable lead as they would win the battle at the free throw line down the stretch. Moore went 10-for-12 and finished with 19 points to lead all scorers, while Miller scored 14 points. The Patriots went on to claim a 53-44 conference win over the Hawks.
Cody Gunckel despite being held to under just 7 points was a monster on the boards pulling down 15 rebounds, while also registering a couple of impressive blocked shots. Matt Miller added 13 boards on the night.
Tri-Village record now stands at 13-5 overall and 9-1 in the conference, their next game is a rescheduled homecoming game Tuesday night against Newton with a JV start time of 5:30pm.
In Junior Varsity action Tri-Village pulled away to earn a 40-35 win over Mississinawa Valley and was led by Aaron Cassel with 15 points. Their record is now 13-5 overall and 8-2 in the conference.
