Matt Miller had another solid game in the paint with 11 points in a win over National Trail.

12/5/09 – Gettysburg, Ohio

The Tri-Village Boys Basketball team made it a 2-0 weekend with a win over National Trail 67-55. It was a boys and girls twin bill and the Blazers were pumped after the Varsity Girl’s dramatic one-point victory leading into the feature game.

It was a charged atmosphere and within the first few minutes of the game the officials had to try and reign in the players to try and keep their emotions in check. Two technical were issued one on both teams. Despite all the emotions basketball did start to evolve… for Tri-Village it was Cody Gunckel who would stay above the fray. Gunckel poured in 15 of the teams 18 points, including a dramatic three-quarter court shot at the buzzer and TV led 18-11.

In the second frame after things settled a bit, Tri-Village started to execute their offense with a little more precision and was able to get some scoring in the paint as well as the outside. Once again Gunckel led the way on 8 points followed by Drew Moore with 7 and Matt Miller 6 points. Tri-Village took a 41-28 half time lead into the locker room.

The offensive display from the first half disappeared for TV in the third quarter. Trail showed no quit in their game continuing to play with fire. Defensively they were able to hold the Patriots to just 7 points while scoring 13 to win the quarter and get back into the game, trailing 48-41 at the end of three quarters of play.

In the final stanza National Trail made a couple of runs at the Patriots closing to within 5 points on a couple of occasions… but they couldn’t get the big basket needed to get over the hump. In the end Tri-Village would get to the free throw line more than Trail and it would be the difference in the end.

Drew Moore, who struggled somewhat on the night along with Gunckel gave the team a lift in the final frame with some big shots and hitting on their free throws to seal the win 67-55.

Cody Gunckel led the Patriots on the night with 28, Drew Moore dropped 18 and Matt Miller added 11 points to lead the way.

“Tonight Cody Gunckel was a player,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “Yesterday Cody didn’t play… but tonight he was the guy. It’s nice to have a few guys who can score the ball, yesterday it was Drew and tonight it was Cody. Matt Miller for the second night in a row played well inside. To his credit he rebounded well, defended well and scored well and maybe we aren’t doing enough to get him a few more touches.”

“I thought all our guys competed well… this was a very emotional game. With both teams being so close and the boys and girls teams playing on the same night it really brings out a lot emotions for both schools.

“They (National Trail) are going to beat some teams this year. They are athletic and competed well. They sort of got us caught up into their emotion and I thought some of our kids made bad decisions because of it. The officials really handled it well and kept things in check. In the second half we should have been able to put the game away… but we made some poor decisions. To be a good basketball team we will need to improve on that,” concluded Sagester.

In Junior Varsity action the Patriots made it a sweep for the boys with a 54-40 win. Aaron Cassel led the way again with 22 points. Three other players hit double figures, Matthew Werner with 11, Jeremy Doolin and Caleb Chowning each dropped in 10 points.

Both the Varsity and Junior Varsity now are 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference and will be back in action on Friday in a league game at Arcanum.
