If there was one thing Tri-Village proved Saturday in its opening round sectional game against National Trail, it’s this. The Patriots don’t need a 20 plus points a game from junior Drew Moore to get a victory.

Moore was held to a mere 14 points but still led all scorers as the Patriots topped the Blazers for the third time this year.

This time by a 51-40 score, setting up the third date of the season with the Arcanum Trojans Thursday in Troy.

“We‘ve got some kids who are capable of scoring. Drew is a huge part of our offense but there are others that can get the job done,” said Pats coach Josh Sagester. “.

Holding just a seven-point lead with eight minutes remaining in the game, Tri-Village started to open things up in the final frame.

The Patriots scored the first five points of the final quarter to take a 41-29 advantage.

Trail got on the board in the frame at the 4:53 mark on a triple from Brett Houdieshell but Tri-Village roared back with eight unanswered points to hold a commanding 49-32 lead with 3:39 remaining.

“We came in here having beat these guys twice and we knew that a third win over them was not going to be easy,” said Sagester. “This game was a lot closer than the final score indicates. Trail played us tough give them credit they played hard and was very patient with the ball. We made some adjustments and took control in the fourth quarter.”

Tri-Village came out like a ball of fire in the first frame, jumping on the Blazers early, leading 18-5 at the end of the opening eight minutes of play.

In that quarter, Moore had netted half of his 14 game points while senior Cody
Gunckle tallied six and Matt Miller five for the Patriots 18 points. Just as things went so well for the Patriots in the opening stanza, it went that bad in the second as Trail held the Patriots to just 11 points in the frame and was able to close to a 25-17 count at the break.

“We had a great first quarter. We came out in a man defense and did what we had to do,” quipped Sagester. “Trail went to a triangle and two in the second quarter and we forced it too much offensively.”

After having just one turnover in the first quarter, the patriots committed six in the second, helping National Trail to climb right back into the game.

The woes didn’t stop after the half for the Patriots.

Tri-Village could only muster 11 points on offense, while Trail put up 12 to trail T-V by a 36-29 score.

While the goal of the Blazers was to hold Moore down on the offensive end, it was Matt Miller who picked up the slack and loomed large for Tri-Village. Miller finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds, five off the offensive glass.
“Matt has been struggling on offense for us lately but has been a load on defense,” Sagester pointed out.

Arcanum is next for the Patriots.

“We beat them once at their place and let one get away in the Holiday Tournament,” said Sagester. “They are a good basketball team and we are going to have to come here ready to play. We have a tournament win under our belts and we need to be ready for Arcanum and get over these jitters. We want to get past Arcanum and get a shot at Jefferson. They are the top seed and we would like a shot at them but we have to focus on Arcanum first.”

In addition, Gunckle added a dozen in support of Moore and Miller.
