It was Homecoming at Tri-Village as they crown Kaily Burns as Queen and Jordan Gary as King. The Patriots would cap off the night with a 79-70 win over the Newton Indians.

New Madison, Ohio – February 17, 2010

Finally, after rescheduling the Homecoming game with the Newton Indians for a third time the weather eased just enough and the game was played. Although it was cold outside it quickly heated up inside as the game was played fast and furious.

Both teams put up big numbers including a total of 21 three-pointers (TV-12, Newton-9) in the game… but in the end Tri-Village was able to stave off a number of Newton hard charges pulling off a 79-70 league win to help celebrate the Homecoming festivities.

Tri-Village hit Newton quickly as Drew Moore hit two treys and Evan Catron added another and when Tyler Garland put back an offensive rebound at 4:24 the Patriots held a 14-2 lead.

Newton got off to a slow start… but began to attack the Tri-Village defense and clawed back to narrow the lead to 17-13 at 1:55.

Cody Gunckel scored 5 points over the last minute to help TV take a 23-16 first quarter lead.

The Indians were determined to keep the pace fast and Tri-Village seemed to be ok playing that style while offering little defense. Newton took advantage to outscore the PATS 22-17 in the second period.

In the period senior Craig Dill hit a three and followed it up with a fielder to stretch TV’s lead to 33-26… but the team struggled from the free throw line and Newton took advantage with a flurry of scoring including a halftime buzzer beater by Chase Lavy to trail by just two 40-38.

In the third frame the fireworks continued with a total of 6 three-pointers being made. Gunckel and Catron both hit treys and Drew Moore connected on three of them.

Newton’s Ryan Payne however wasn’t about to be outdone hitting consecutive three’s which included a rare 4-point play that erased an 8 point TV lead as Newton again found themselves in the game trailing 51-50 at the 4:03 mark.

Drew Moore’s 13 points matched the same total for Payne in the frame to help TV go up 63-57.

In the final stanza the Patriots weren’t able to quell the hot hand of Ryan Payne… but they were able to find enough of their own offense to offset his shooting to go on to claim a 79-70 win.

Cody Gunckel led the way in the stanza using the dribble drive to the basket to register 9 points. Despite the flow of offense both teams struggled from the free throw line as TV shot just 11-for-26 for 42% giving the Indians an opportunity to stay in the game. However, the tribe struggled at the line as well shooting 11-for-24 for 46%.

Newton’s Ryan Payne led all scorers with 32 points on the night. Tri-Village placed 4 players in double figures and was led by Drew Moore with 27 points including 6 three pointers. Cody Gunckel dropped 19 points, Evan Catron on three trey’s added 11 and Matt Miller contributed 10.

The game was bittersweet for Drew Moore and his family. Drew’s maternal grandpa died unexpectedly in the morning and Drew was visibly shaken and unsure of whether to play or not… but he and his family felt it was best he played. Drew forged ahead dedicating his performance to his grandpa, the result was 6-three pointers and 27 points. After the game there was an outpouring of emotion from the Moore family and rightfully so in such a difficult time… but one grandpa could look down and be proud.

Tri-Village now stands at 14-5 overall and 10-1 in the conference with one remaining conference game against Franklin Monroe on senior night this Friday. A win by the Patriots will ensure no less than a share of the conference title. A title they haven’t won since 2003.

The Junior Varsity also recorded an easy win over the Indians led by Aaron Cassel with 21 points. Their record now stands at 13-6 overall and 9-2 in the conference.
