It would be the second game in a row Tri-Village faced an opponent starting out defensively in a triangle and two to slow down the Patriots. In the early going it didn’t look like it was a problem as Tyler Garland buried two foul line jumpers to start the game… and then the PATS fed post player Matt Miller on the interior who dropped 10 points in the opening quarter. TV held a 23-15 first quarter lead.
In the second period frustration set in for the Patriots who stopped taking advantage of what the defense was giving them forcing shots and making bad decisions… all of which allowed Tri-County North the opportunity to creep back into the game. In fact, the Panthers actually took the lead 31-29 with 1:09 to play… but a Cody Gunckel trey with 16 seconds gave the Patriots the lead going into the locker room 32-31.
In the third frame TV put some focus on their defense and limited outside shots from the Panthers. Moore dropped in (2) three-pointers that put the Patriots up 38-31. By playing better perimeter defense TV forced North to look inside… and they found success with their own big man Overholzer who scored all 7 of Tri-County North’s points in the quarter but Tri-Village would still lead 45-38.
In the final stanza Miller would take over again inside as the Patriots maintained a 10-point lead for much of the quarter. Down the stretch the Panthers put Moore and Gunckel at the free throw line and they would make sure the lead would hold up… but not before the McAdams brothers last ditch effort as they would hit three straight triples on consecutive trips down the floor. But they were too little too late and Tri-Village pulled out the 70-58 league win.
“We made this game closer than it should have been,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “We have a number of scorers on this team along with a good supporting cast. If we trust the system and play within ourselves we are going to be a really good basketball team. We aren’t there yet; defensively we also need to get better. I thought we did a better job in the second half on the perimeter… but we aren’t dropping down and cutting off the backside. They (Tri-County North) did a good job of creating some mismatches. We got a real good on ball defensive effort from Evan Catron on Brandon McAdams tonight to slow him down. Offensively Matt Miller played like he did in the summer and really took over. He had 26 points, 15 rebounds and 7 blocked shots almost a triple-double. Our supporting cast of Colby Morris and Tyler Garland also did a very nice job in the win,” concluded Sagester.
The win puts Tri-Village at 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the conference. Along with Miller’s 26 points, Cody Gunckel had 20 and Drew Moore added 14 in the win.
In Junior Varsity action Tri-Village came from behind to beat the Panthers 48-45 with Aaron Cassel leading the way with 37 points, 11 rebounds and 6 steals. The JV team record now stands at 5-1 overall and 3-1 in conference action.
