Whenever Tri-Village and Twin Valley South get together it’s a classic chess match between Coaches Josh Sagester and Tony Augsperger. Tonight was no different as South threw everything they had at the Patriots in a triangle and two defense to slow down Drew Moore and Cody Gunckel. Coach “A” applied the pressure by subbing often with his guards running the two ragged and it worked for much of the game in a classic back and forth affair… but in the end Tri-Village would outlast the pressure making just enough plays down the stretch to pull out the win 47-42.
In the opening period Tri-Village got two early scores from Tyler Garland in the center of the triangle to go up 4-0. After both teams traded field goals and South hit two threes the game was deadlocked at 8-8. Both teams traded free throws to end the period tied 10-10.
In the second quarter South took advantage of a cold shooting Tri-Village team. The Patriots were missing point blank shots in the paint. They took advantage to go up 20-13 led by Clint Spitler with 6 points and a trey by Ryan Burns. Drew Moore would spark the Patriots to get back into the game scoring 7 points with TV trailing 24-26 at the half.
In the third frame it turned out to be a defensive struggle with Tri-Village winning it 6-4 to send the game in the final quarter tied up 30-30.
With the game tied up 34-34 South would come up big on a second and finally a third effort that resulted in a three-pointer by Levi Robbins at 6:20 to send them up 37-34. That trip down the floor was typical for Panthers’ as they seemed to get every loose ball along with second and third opportunities.
The Patriots started to slowly work back in the game and probably played their best team basketball over the next 3 minutes as they got scoring from a variety of players on the floor. First a Moore free throw that was followed up by an athletic Tyler Garland rebound tip in to tie up the game 37-37. They the followed that up with two free throws by Gunckel (9-for-10 on the night) and an Evan Catron drive to the bucket to go up 41-37 with 3:15 to play.
Twin Valley South though responded in a déjà vu possession that took place earlier in the period off a second chance trey again by Robbins (his 4th on the night) to help them to close to 41-40 at 2:45. But Tri-Village would finish off South from the free throw line hitting 6-for-8 down the stretch to close out the game for a 47-42 win.
“This was a classic Tri-Village vs. Twin Valley South game,” said Coach Josh Sagester. “Tony had his kids ready to play… but they had Saturday night off and time to prepare. We are in the middle of playing a very heavy schedule after two double weekends and now a Tuesday night game with just one day to prepare. I thought they (TV South) played a little more physical and intense then we did in the first half and we didn’t match them. Our kids didn’t play their best, we gave some kids an opportunity tonight to step up and some of them didn’t do it. To our credit we worked through it and gutted it out for the win,” concluded Sagester.
Cody Gunckel paced the Patriots with 15 while Drew Moore added 11 points.
Tri-Village improves to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in conference play and will travel to Lewisburg Friday to take on the Tri-County North Panthers.
In Junior Varsity action Tri-Village dropped their first game of the year 48-44 to Twin Valley South. Their record is now 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action.
