Kyle Pipenger was on fire early scoring 18 of his game high 23 points but the Bees put the clamps on in the second half with a diamond and one defense.

New Madison, Ohio – January 27, 2012

On paper the match-up between Bethel and Tri-Village looked like a toss-up. Coming into the contest Bethel was scoring 52ppg while giving up 33ppg. On the flip side TV was scoring 60ppg and giving up 39ppg.

Statistically it appeared to be a stalemate that would strategically play itself out in the 4th period with two coaches pulling the strings.

In the opening frame the Patriots jumped out to an 18-11 lead riding the hot shooting of Kyle Pipenger. Pipenger scored 11 points with Shade Brubaker adding 5 and Tyler Cook 2.

Tri-Village got back-to-back fielders from Cook and Pipenger to go up at 21-11 at 5:24 in the second quarter…but that’s when things started to go awry.

“I can’t figure it out yet about this team…we get a lead and tend to relax a little and get careless with the basketball,” said T-V coach Josh Sagester.

“I really felt we were just a few possessions away from really make it difficult for Bethel to even be in the game,” added Sagester.

The Bees took advantage with senior Kyle Hamlin getting a steal leading to two points that was followed by a triple from big man Gus Schwieterman and Bethel had clawed their way back into the game trailing at the half 23-18.

A very gritty Bees team continued to chip away at the Patriots in the 3rd quarter. Dusty Elsass who finished the first half with a basket opened the 2nd half with a trey and Bethel had pulled to within two 23-21.

Pipenger answered with two straight baskets for the Patriots…but a three-pointer from sophomore Patrick Bain kept the Bees close.

With the score 30-27 T-V and 4 minutes left to play in the 3rd quarter Bethel switched from man-to-man defense to a diamond and one to contain Pipenger and thus the stalemate began.

The plan worked as T-V was held scoreless the rest of the 3rd while the Bees got a fielder by Schwieterman at the buzzer to trail 30-29.

Schwieterman opened the final stanza with a runner in the lane and Bethel had regained the lead 31-30, the first since the opening minutes of the game.

Then Patriots big man Tyler Cook came up lame twisting his ankle and momentum appeared to be shifting to Bethel.

Just when it looked bleak, Matt Werner rained in a trey from the top of the key and it was the ammunition coach Sagester needed to counteract the strategy of coach Hickman from Bethel.

After a defensive stop leading 33-31 with just 4:30 to play coach Sagester pulled his string holding the ball to force Bethel out of their junk defense.

Coach Hickman would not yield and seemed content to take his chances allowing over 3 minutes to come off the clock. Hickman eventually had no choice but then to come out and pressure the ball.

The Patriots called a timeout with 50 seconds to play and on the inbounds play Kyle Pipenger was able to drive off the left wing past the defender to the hole for a layup…and with 47 second to play the Patriots led 35-31.

The Bees had one last gasp as Bain scored an old-fashioned three pointer with 20 seconds to play and the Bees trailed 36-33.

With 11 seconds to play Bethel fouled Haedon Schlechty for the one and bonus and the junior was nothing but net on two of the biggest free throws of his career to put the game on ice for a 38-33 win.

“We knew coming it this was going to be tough,” said Sagester.

“They (Bethel) are athletic, play good defense and very patient on offense that leads to easy baskets …but I have to give credit to our kids for playing tremendous man-to-man defense and taking a lot of that away from them,” continued Sagester.

“Kyle Pipenger is shooting the basketball with so much confidence right now and so it didn’t surprise me they went to a diamond and one. When that happens we have to knock down a couple of outside shots and then it opens up the inside and we didn’t do that tonight,” added Sagester.

“When Matthew Werner hit the shot in the 4th quarter and I’m down one big man it was an easy decision to pull the ball. I have confidence in our guards that we can hold the ball and make them come out of the defense and ultimately it was the difference,” concluded Sagester.

Statistically the game played out as a close contest…but in the end the Patriots won the stalemate with coach Sagester pulling the last string.

Kyle Pipenger led tri-Village with 23 points, Matt Werner had 6 assists and Evan Barger 8 rebounds.

Tri-Village goes to 12-3 overall and host another 12-3 team the Dixie Greyhounds for Hall-Of-Fame night.

The JV boys ran into a very solid junior laded Bethel team but were able to pull out a hard fought contest to go 15-0 on the year. Ryian Burson led the Patriots with 10 points.
