It was a special night and a chance for the Boys Team to display all their handwork to the many distinguished members of the Hall-Of-Fame and they wouldn’t disappoint.
The Patriots were taking on the Dixie Greyhounds coming in on a hot streak winning their last 7 games in a row.
Dixie, a team much like T-V has a good balance of athletes, with size and good guard play and it was all on display as the two teams battled it out in a game that saw 10 ties and 15 lead changes.
The Patriots started the contest with 8 points from the bigs inside, Evan Barger with 6 and Tyler Cook 2…but Dixie countered with their bigs including a dunk from senior John Isaacs to tie the game.
Kyle Pipenger then got in the mix and finished the quarter with 7 points to give Tri-Village a 15-12 lead.
Dixie came out to in the second period and got scoring from their guards to take the lead 17-15.
Evan Barger was saddled with his 3rd foul and took a seat for most of the 2nd frame.
The Patriots then cooled off and was having trouble scoring…but got two big baskets from Cook inside to put the Patriots up 22-19 to end the first half.
That lead would then be nullified due to a technical assessed to Andrew Willcox at the end of the first half that allowed Dixie to begin the second half from the free throw line and with possession of the ball go ahead 23-22.
The Patriots got two straight fielders from Evan Barger inside to go back up…but the lead see sawed back an forth until Matt Werner hit his second trey to end the 3rd quarter with TV leading 40-36.
Kyle Pipenger opened the final stanza with a drive to give more cushion and it looked like they might be able to pull away.
Sophomore guard Griffin Moore of Dixie then scored 7 straight points (only points on the night) to help Dixie get back into and eventually tie the game at 45.
It became a battle of wills and behind Kyle Pipenger the Patriots were not going to be denied…trailing 49-50, Pipenger made a drive to the basket and went over two defenders to put the PATS back on top 51-50.
“I saw a look in his eyes, said coach Josh Sagester. I could tell he was upset that he missed the front end of the one and bonus on the previous possession and knew he was going to make a play.”
As in most late game situations the Patriots were able to control the basketball and get to the free throw line to finish out the game.
Matt Werner hit 2 throws with 34 seconds to go up 53-50 and Shade Brubaker iced it with 6 seconds to give Tri-Village a huge non-conference win 54-50 over Dixie.
Kyle Pipenger dropped 22 points followed by Evan Barger and Matthew Werner each with 10 points. Barger pulled down 9 boards and Werner dished 6 dimes in the win.
“This was a big win for us tonight said Sagester. They Dixie are a good basketball team and for us to get back-to-back quality wins over two Division III area ranked teams says a lot about this group of kids,” added Sagester.
“Kyle Pipenger is playing awful well, I’m not sure there are too many guys who can guard him and he is making plays when we need them.”
Sagester continued, “another guy playing well is Evan Barger he is playing big…at times tonight it felt like we were leaving it all up to him to rebound, and against a pretty big front court like Dixie we need to rebound by committee.”
“Matt Werner had a real nice game, he made some timely shots, free throws in the stretch and handled the ball real well tonight,” concluded Sagester.
The Junior Varsity pulled out another win over Dixie with Colton Linkous scoring 17, Kaleb Chowning 16 and Ryian Burson 9 to go to 16-0.
The two teams will be back in action Tuesday night traveling to Ansonia for another CCC league game.
