112/2/11 NEW MADISON, Ohio
Tri-Village opened the season against league rival Franklin Monroe. The Jets were coming off a 24-2 seaon last year that saw them win a District Title and one game short of the state semi-finals.
Tri-Village was able to get off to a quick start jumping out to a 15-6 first quarter lead.
The Jets who graduated 6 seniors from last years team, lost most of their scoring and it showed as they struggled in the opening frame to find offense.
With the Patriots size the Jets packed in a zone taking away the inside game of 6’6” Evan Barger and 6’5” Tyler Cook. Shade Brubaker and Kyle Pipenger took advantage as they knocked down several outside shots.
Tri-Village went on to claim a 27-9 halftime lead with Brubaker knocking down three treys for 9 points and Pipenger scoring 13 to lead the PATS.
“We got off to a nice start said Patriots head Coach Josh Sagester. We executed our stuff real well against their zone and Shade and Kyle took what the defense gave us and knocked down shots against their zone”, added Sagester.
The Jets slowly began got in the flow in the second half doubling their offensive production from the first half as Grant Skelton and Jaden Horner found success with Skelton scoring 11 points and Horner 10. However they were unable to overcome the 18 point deficit.
Tri-Village pretty much matched their first half production and went on to claim a 52-31 win over the Jets.
The win would be Coach Josh Sagester’s 100th overall, who is starting his 8th season at the helm for the Patriots. “I am happy to get the win said Sagester and hope there are many more to come for this program and the school.”
“I was real happy with our half court defense tonight, we played solid and forced FM to be patient on offense to work and get a good shot. With the exception of not getting back a few times on defense, overall it was a good effort.”
“This was typical first game jitters we had a few kids playing who haven’t been in this situation and you could tell…so it’s good to get that out of the way tonight and get ready for National Trail tomorrow”, concluded Sagester.
The Patriots were led by Kyle Pipenger with 23 points and 3 steals. Shade Brubaker chipped in 15 points and dished 4 assists. Matt Werner also dropped 4 dimes , while Evan Barger and Tyler Cook each pull down 5 board a piece to lead T-V respectively in those categories.
In the Junior Varsity game Tri-Village won 52-10. Freshman Colton Linkous and sophomore Ryian Burson each sored 18 points for the PATS.
The TV boys are back in action on Saturday for the traditional boys and girls double header. The JV girls play at 3pm, JV Boys at 4:30pm, Varsity girls at 6pm and Varsity boys at 7:30.
FM will travel to New Lebanon to take on the Dixie Greyhounds in non-conference action on Saturday.
