12/27/11 Pitsburg, Ohio
Franklin Monroe coming into the 49th Annual Jet Holiday Tournament was a slight underdog against Troy Christian and pulled off a thrilling 55-53 win to advanced to the championship game against Tri-Village a 64-41 winner over Arcanum.
The Jets undeniably were large underdogs with a 52-31 loss to the Patriots the first game of the season…but the defending champs relished the fact they were underdogs and played loose with nothing to lose.
After trailing 4-0 to start the game they went on a 6-point run to gain the lead. Evan Barger scored a fielder to tie the game at 6 each at the 3:55 mark…but that would be the closest Tri-Village would be all night.
The Jets were clicking offensively with Travis Feitshans scoring 2 treys and one from Devin Fourman on the outside while Trey Mong worked the inside for 6 points to give the Jets a 17-12 first quarter lead.
Both teams ran a very deliberate offense in the second quarter that was tightly contested and the Jets would win the battle on a tip in buzzer beater by Feitshans to take a 27-20-halftime lead.
The offensive woes continued into the third frame as Tri-Village was out of sync in part to the defensive pressure applied by the Jets. In fact FM scored 10 unanswered points with all five players on the floor contributing.
Kyle Pipenger finally got the Patriots on the board late in the quarter with a tip-in rebound. T-V then got hit with a technical foul out of frustration as the Jets were in complete control.
Barger scored at the buzzer but T-V trailed 37-24.
Barger scored the first two baskets for the Patriots in the final stanza but the Jets were able to answer.
With time getting short Tri-Village was forced to foul and Jaden Horner went to the line 4 times draining 7 of 8 in the stretch. The Patriots could not close the gap and FM was able to defend their Tournament title by the score of 47-34.
Evan Barger led the Patriots with the 14 points while also pulling down 12 rebounds and Kyle Pipenger added 13 in the loss.
Tri-Village players Tyler Cook and Kyle Pipenger were also given tournament recognition.
Tri-Village falls to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the conference and will back in action on January 6th hosting National Trail.
In the junior varsity contest Tri-Village won the Jet Tourney beating FM by the score of 50-31 also claiming back-to-back titles and remains undefeated.
